China: BMW compact sedan concept revealed!

At the 2015 Guangzhou motor show, BMW has taken the wraps of their compact sedan concept, giving us a preview of the 1-Series sedan or 2-Series sedan. With the production car, BMW will hope to take advantage of the rising demand for premium compact cars. The premium compact sedan space has already seen rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz launch the A3 sedan and CLA-Class.

Models like the 1-Series sedan will be targeting younger buyers, and thus, the concept car features a sporty and aggressive design language. Up front we see the signature BMW kidney grille, LED headlights, a low set fascia to make the bonnet appear longer, while the front bumper gets some edgy styling with the body coloured outline framing the black slats on the intakes.

The side profile is sculpted by multiple character lines in addition to the Hofmeister kink at the rear door. BMW says the liquid metal bronze paint shade of the concept has pigments that shift between light and dark depending on the light intensity and direction. Flared wheel arches sit over 20-inch, double spoke design wheels. The sloping roofline drops down to connect with the beefed up boot lip at the rear. A large chrome insert and slim fog lamps cut the bulk in the rear bumper with L-shaped LEDs in the tail lights.

On the inside, the dashboard has a driver centric design and the cabin features a heads-up display, a panoramic sunroof, an 8.8-inch infotainment display, nappa leather upholstery, open-pored wood trim, with brushed aluminium touches as well. The rear seat is a bench, but has been designed to seat only two.

Specifications have yet to be revealed, but the UKL platform based sedan is likely to get a series of 3 and 4-cylinder engines with the car being offered as a front wheel or all-wheel drive model.

Re: China: BMW compact sedan concept revealed!

A mixed bag!

The rear and side profile looks great. And I really like compact sedans from BMW like from the 70s and 80s. The front is a bit confusing though. Just hope the stupid headlights meets grille fad on the latest cars is gone by the time this one is ready for production.

The other major issues are the 3 cylinder motor and lack of rear wheel drive. Knowing BMW, both will be excellent. We do have some excellent front wheel drive cars from various other manufacturers and the 3 pot motor on the i8 has got very good accolades from the press. Let's wait and see how this one will turn out to be since the electric motor won't be there for help.

But this being a BMW, it has to be a RWD car. Even if the FWD version of this one drives very well, its lost that purity of the badge. The badge which came up with advertisements like this.

And you also know that, that 3er you have always wanted as a kid is slowly becoming out of reach with cars like these. Hope the all-wheel drive version has considerable RWD bias at the very least.

Re: China: BMW compact sedan concept revealed!

Absolute cracker of a design. Never seen such a cohesive design in a long time, not just from BMW but anyone else either. Love the latest interpretation of the kidney grille with sharp eyed lamps and the lovely derriere is a sight to behold. If I was in the market for a luxury CS, this would be it just for the way it looks; don't really care how it drives. A clear departure from the current interiors, that too with that lovely steering wheel. Could have toned down the orange bits though; looks a bit tacky.

BMW's design has matured really well like vintage wine since the controversial days of Bangle. From a designer's perspective, it's hard to maintain the family face and yet look distinct, still sport the trademark double kidney grille and hoffmeister kink and still look tempting and contemporary. It's a tough act to follow and BMW has surprisingly managed to pull it off with the CS. Mighty impressed!

Think everyone should know that the 1 series sedan was already spotted testing last year;

The trick for the cohesiveness is the size. So far the tradition has been to consistently increase each new model length and width by a couple of inches or more, but this downsizing is refreshing to see and like the Mini Cooper its the small cars that are actually more fun to drive as we can be aware of whats going on at each corner of the vehicle. BMW should now focus on making smaller driver centric cars in the form of the 2 Series and 1 Series CS. They should also stop making the Mini's bigger. The Cooper 5 door is about as big as they should dare to make, drove the same model this past weekend and I'd say it beats the Bimmers hands down in terms of driving position, size and torque. BMW should retain its luxury factor and conservative interiors and leave the super cool fun to drive experience to Mini.

Re: China: BMW compact sedan concept revealed!

The weakness has always been optimistic pricing of BMW and then giving unreasonable discounts to people who can negotiate.

BMW 1 series costs 29.9L ex-showroom (Add 7-8L for OTR Bangalore)

Even funnier is BMW X1 (with M Sport badging and same 2.0L engine) has an ex-showroom of 38L making it almost 50L OTR in Bangalore.

If BMW-1 series hatch, costs 37L OTR how much would you price a 1 series sedan?

BMW 3-series (prestige) costs 45L OTR - Luxury and Sportline cost 50L
