Maybe I am missing something, but I would have thought that field replaceable battery is a good idea. The users would have less dependence on the auto-manufacturer and/or the OEM, as well as allow for competition on price /quality.

I do not think technology has matured to this level. Standardization is always a double edged weapon. So if there are multiple power packs, which is inevitable in the beginning, then we are forcing standardization, which may not necessarily be a good thing. Once the technology evolves (say 3-4 years) thrn pushing for standardization may be good.

Slightly OT, but the Tesla installed 100 MW battery has started operations in Australia. The battery aims to stabilize the electricity grid and store electricity from renewable sources to be used later.



The battery pack is located in Jamestown, about 200km (125 miles) north of Adelaide, and connected to a wind farm run by French energy company Neoen.

Such batteries will be important in the future to store electricity generated from solar, wind and tidal power plants - providing a cleaner energy to all including electric vehicles.

In typical Musk style, he had declared that the project would be free if they couldn't get it ready in 100 days. The countdown began on 30 September, 2017 after approval from regulators and the project was completed in 60 days. This also highlights the improvements in the battery technology including costs and the time frame for its deployment.

What is new. In Britain milk floats have been battery driven for ages. In Edinburgh I even saw milk delivery in a horse drawn vehicle in 1974! Frankly this makes sense since driving from house to house is ideal for a non IC engine.

Read an interesting article regarding the neighborhood auto mechanic and electric vehicles.
Seems like a page out of the book - "Who Moved My Cheese" by Dr Spencer Johnson.

What the article hints at is that the mechanics currently employed in the auto industry are not upgrading their skills to take care of the electric vehicle / autonomous vehicle landscape.

The reason is simple: Unlike gas-powered engines, electric engines don’t require oil changes, have far fewer moving parts and rarely break down, eliminating much of the maintenance that repair shops rely on. The latest electric vehicles can be serviced using parts purchased online or fixed remotely through over-the-air updates.

Plug In America, a non profit organisation that is the voice of plug-in cars in the US, has come out with the year's top 10 electric milestones.

Listing them below:
1. China, India, Germany, France, Britain, Norway, and Netherlands (nearly half of the world auto market) all committed to eliminate sales of new gas cars by 2040 or earlier.

2. General Motors declared that “the future is all-electric” and committed to rolling out 18 pure electric cars by 2023.

3. The Tesla Model 3 was launched to great fanfare, with a backlog of 450,000 orders and a declaration from Motor Trend that it is “the Car of the Century.”v

4. 35 different models of plug-in cars became available for sale in the United States.

5. The United States passed 700,000 plug-in vehicles sold and the world surpassed 2 million.

6. China established a requirement that all automakers must sell 10% plug-in cars by 2019—e.g. next model year!

7. The first plug-in hybrid minivan, the Chrysler Pacifica, went on sale.

8. The first moderately-priced electric car with a 200+ mile range, the Chevy Bolt, became available in all 50 states and was recognized by Motor Trend as the Car of the Year.

9. National Drive Electric Week celebrated EVents from coast to coast, in all 50 states for the first time, covering every major metropolitan area (276 events in all).

10. Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority committed to turning its fleet of over 2,000 buses all-electric by 2030, making it by far the largest electric bus fleet in the world.


The future is electric for sure, whether we like it or not. But with cars like Tesla, at least the performance and looks are appealing. Yes, I will miss the sweet sound of a petrol engine, but someone will sort that out as well soon.

Now the Chinese are starting to Challenge Tesla in EV landscape. A Chinese startup NIO, funded by big investors, has unveiled their EV ES8 SUV as a competitor for Tesla Model X. The pricing obviously is less than that of Tesla. Will the EV market also go the way of the Mobile phone industry, where Chinese manufacturers are amongst the major players now.

Many details are still not known, but it is said to be coming with swappable batteries and all Aluminum chassis to reduce the weight of SUV.

Because electric cars—especially their batteries—weigh a considerable amount, NIO says it made it a goal to produce a “normally” weighted SUV. The ES8 is fitted with an all-aluminum body and chassis to offset the batteries. NIO does mention a “charging experience that surpasses refueling at gas stations” that offers a swappable battery for the unit. It is unknown how this will tie into existing EV infrastructure.

What an year this has been for EVs. Toyota again updated their road map today. They are now planning to make at least 10 fully-electric EVs by early 2020s with sales starting in China. They will start selling those subsequently in Japan, India, the US and Europe. By 2025, every Toyota model and luxury-brand Lexus model will either have an electric version or will be a dedicated electric car as per the company's statement.

The speed at which things are changing across the automobile world because of the govt initiatives in China, Europe, India and the competition from the likes Tesla, GM and Nissan, I am sure Toyota will be forced to make all their vehicles fully-electric before 2025.

SIAM Proposes All New Vehicle Sales In India To Be Electric Vehicles By 2047 .

SIAM is aiming at 40 per cent of new vehicle sales in the country to be pure electric by 2030.

The paper has been brought out in line with the government's vision of 100 per cent electric for public mobility and 40 per cent electric for personal mobility by 2030.

Proposing 100 per cent pure electric vehicles - battery electric and fuel cell -- by the 100th anniversary of India's Independence in 2047, SIAM outlined a road map that includes 60 per cent of new vehicle sales in the country to employ greener technologies like hybrids and other alternative fuels by 2030.

Okinawa Autotech (It is an Indian company with a Japanese sounding Name. Wonder Why?) has launched its second and what is being called the fastest e-scooter in India, Okinawa Praise. The e-scooter is priced at Rs.66,273 (On-road Delhi). The specs and features, at least on the paper, are pretty good for the price. It has a top speed of 75 Kmph, Range of 170-200 Km per charge and has disc brakes both at the front and the rear. The batteries, for now, seems to be of Lead and the company is planning to introduce Li-ion batteries soon. The company already has another model called Ridge, but its range is limited to below 100 Km.

I am in Sri Lanka right now and so pleasantly surprised to see so many hybrids on these streets. Equally disappointed that our policy does not facilitate these cars being more mainstream in India.

Saw cars ranging from Honda Fit Shuffle hybrid, Toyota Corolla axio hybrid, Honda vezel hybrid, Honda Insight hybrid, bmw 530e and many others.

These are all cars that I’m sure can easily be brought here if the policy was favorable. Have a 10-12 year plan for full EVs but would be useful to push hybrids immediately.

@volkman10 - Thanks for the article. Though the above slide on "Motor, Battery, Inverter" explains the technology, I still had to google for more information. A short note from my side

ICE - Internal Combustion Engine
HEV - Hybrid Electric Vehicles - ICE + Electric Power E.g. Toyota Prius
PHEV - Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles ICE + Electric Power (plugging to power source) E.g. Chevrolet Volt
BEV - Battery Electric Vehicles. No ICE. E.g. Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model S
FCEV - Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

What is interesting is Toyota foresee only around 10% market share for BEV and FCEV by 2030, though overall market for electric vehicles would be around 50%. So ICE is not going away very soon as it will be still part of HEV and PHEV.
