Kerala seeks University of Birmingham expertise for introducing electric vehicles.

Professor Robin Mason, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International):
Quote:
The University of Birmingham has deep expertise in a number of scientific and engineering specialisms relating to electric vehicles. We hope to work closely with the state government in helping the people of Kerala adopt this environment-friendly form of transport
Kerala leads the way among Indian states in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals and has declared an ambitious e-mobility vision and implementation policy.

Quote:
The state government is piloting 10 electric buses on inter-city routes and intends to tender for another 1,500 electric buses going forward.
Delegates are engaging with UK experts in charging and storage infrastructure, battery manufacture, technology and recycling, electric motors and vehicle technology. They have plans to establish a centre of excellence for Electric Vehicles in the state.

Honda e powertrain details released

The Honda e, which is a compact hatchback, is expected to be the first electric Honda to be built on a dedicated EV platform. The Japanese carmaker has revealed more details of the platform.

The platform features a 50:50 weight distribution, a low center of gravity thanks to underfloor batteries mounted centrally. An electric motor mounted on the rear axle powers the rear wheels. It also gets independent suspension on all four wheels. The suspension components are made up of forged aluminium to reduce weight.

The charging port of the car is integrated into the bonnet with an illuminated glass panel that reveals the charging status of the battery. The car gets a water-cooled 35.5 kWh battery pack and the claimed range is over 200 km. The battery can be charged with either Type 2 AC connection or a CCS2 DC rapid charger. With fast charging, it is claimed to take 30 minutes to charge to 80%.

Honda claims that they have received 31,000 expressions of interest and reservations can be made in UK, Germany, France and Norway. The Honda e is expected to make its debut later this year.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

When range is the principal concern over eVs; why Honda is still looking at a 200 km range (design value / ideal condition) while other players are working towards offering beyond 500 km per charge !

Leave aside developed markets like EU, the US & Australia even in developing countries like ours, eVs from erstwhile Reva, M&M and Tata's have been rejected by private users because of range anxiety.

What kind of market Honda plans to target? 200 km in ideal condition will actually workout at 150 km in all-weather operating conditions and may further go down with the usage of batteries after 2 -3 years.

I am also against placing charging port in the front ! Most of the accidents happen due to head on collision or rear ending. The present location for fuel filling (next to door) is the ideal location that is practiced for both liquid as well as gaseous fuels (LPG, CNG) and is the safest location.

Damaging the charging port even at smallest of the accidents is not something that people may be comfortable with ! I see it as unethical way of generating business for ASS for an otherwise low maintenance vehicle !

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Honda E is nothing but production version of Urban EV. Laos they were claimimg it be around 350km in Geneva Motor Show. May be the 200 mark is with stringent WLTP instead of NEDC. But yeah its on a lesser side.

The position of charging socket is inside bonnet, lets hope its not more towards the bumper (like Kona EV & Leaf) since few have raised this accident related apprehensions over it. But yeah CCS2 & AC 2 (since Europe market launch) is indeed a great choice.

Rest, lets see when Honda will get out of their hybrid mindset & start offering dedicated EV in local market.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Toyota's BEV plans: In the early 2020s, Toyota would like to introduce 10 BEV models worldwide, including six global models, based on e-TNGA platform.

-For markets with high demand for BEVs, such as China, the United States, and Europe, Toyota is conducting development toward the popularization of BEVs.

- To respond to customers' needs and to encourage many customers to choose its BEVs, such development is being conducted in an efficient manner that will allow Toyota to offer a sufficient number of variations of BEVs at affordable prices.

The list includes:

Compact car (with Suzuki and Toyota's Daihatsu subsidiary)
Medium crossover
Medium sedan
Medium minivan
Medium SUV (with Subaru)
Large SUV

Concerns:

The message from Toyota includes also two concerns - the first about overall profitability of BEVs and the second about battery supply. This is why Toyota is working with various battery makers.

The Shift to electrification is over-hyped: BMW

Quote:
BMW thinks diesel engines will survive another 20 years, and petrol could last another 30 years.
Quote:
Electrification is high on the agenda, but BMW says internal-combustion engines will survive another three decades before being entirely usurped by electric or hydrogen vehicles.

"The shift to electrification is over-hyped. Battery-electric vehicles cost more in terms of raw materials for batteries. This will continue and could eventually worsen as demand for these raw materials increases

He may be right. But it's weird that they put out a statement like this within days of unveiling a whole new bunch of EV concepts and stating that they would "accelerate their plans to build new electric models". As such, they hope to offer 25 electrified vehicles by 2023 - 2 years earlier than what they'd originally planned. It's like someone who stubbornly says that it won't rain and then proceeds to carry an umbrella anyway.

Saw the Autocar shown. In Norway Taxis are mostly Tesla, and Hormazd was reviewing the Merc EV. Was very Illuminating. How far they have progressed. Charging stations grossly outnumber fuel pumps.

Thats due to strong government incentives. Ironically, the reinvested North Sea oil profits have been used to build up the infrastructure coupled with low taxes on electric cars. Cars are very expensive in Norway normally even though Norwegians are extremely well off.

It also helps that Norwegians enjoy an abundance of hydroelectricity!

Norway is one of the few nations which use Electricity to Directly produce Nitric Acid (basically by arcing air). Nobody else finds the process economical. I think of late they were buying Crude from the UK (Scots). So yes, they have abundance of (almost free) hydroelectric power. During WW2 they were one of the prime producers of Heavy Water, and still are.
