Adaptive cruise control (ACC) on 2018 VW Golf

I am currently on a 11 day driving holiday in Wales, UK with a practically new VW Golf diesel hatchback having a 7 speed automatic gearbox.

It has a very smart feature (ACC). Apart from other functions the ACC incorporates what one may call "Smart Micro Hybrid". The way it works is this :

When you are in traffic and you brake to a halt with with cars in front of you, the engine cuts off while the car is still on Drive, the ignition remaining on and your foot being on the brake pedal. As soon as the car in front of you starts to move the engine starts automatically and the car moves forward when you release the brake. A big step ahead of the Scorpio's "micro hybrid" where you have to press the clutch to make the car start. Unfortunately my Automatic Scorpio does not have micro-hybrid.

Despite a 168 BHP engine this car has run 63 miles per UK gallon, about 22.4 KMPL, over 300 miles (in the 2 days I have driven so far) over all kinds of roads, mostly B roads and A roads with a bit of motorway. The average speed of 29 MPH (46 KMPH) will indicate that I have not been cruising on 7th gear at 100 KMPH (the highest fuel economy speed) much of the time.

Note : I have set the Google map on my iPhone at "avoid highways" to minimise mindless high speed runs on motorways, preferring a leisurely drive along winding roads with great views.

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

2020 VW Golf Spied Showing Off Cabin and Engine bay.

VW will begin production of the eighth-generation in June 2019, and they'll go on sale in the fourth quarter of that year.

The next-gen Volkswagen Golf has been spotted testing, and the model under is not under wraps and gives clear views of the engine and cabin area.

Quote:
There's no obvious camouflage on this Golf test mule, and its design suggests that VW's designers plan only small changes for the vehicle (see comparison above). The revised front end appears slightly blunter than the current model. At the rear, the a C-pillar looks more upright, which makes the eighth-generation Golf appear more boxy than the existing one.
Quote:
the new Golf reportedly rides on a modified version of the venerable MQB platform. An increased use of lightweight materials allegedly helps the hatchback shed around 110 pounds (50 kilograms). VW also intends to offer a variety of engines with a 48-volt mild hybrid system for improving fuel economy. The company's increased use of cylinder shut-off and engine-off coasting would also improve efficiency.
Quote:
A digital screen sits in the instrument panel, indicating this tech would be available. A blank housing on the center stack suggests there could be a display for infotainment and HVAC controls there, too. This one features an automatic gearbox, but a manual would still be available, too.

Artificial intelligence in the cockpit, clean engines and hybrid for all - VW makes the Golf fit for the next few years. Unveiling in 2019!

Golf 8 will feature two large screens taking over all the car's functions. This setup will be standard even on the base model
The climate control buttons will be deleted as well, replaced by some sort of slider below the main screen.

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

Golf MK8 will be in the production line from June 2019, will downsize its variants.

may no longer be offered in three-door and Wagon bodystyles.
Quote:
VW’s alleged reasoning for eliminating these two bodystyles is to position the new-age Golf as an upmarket car appealing to BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class buyers looking to downsize
Thus the New Golf will be larger in size - larger track than all Golfs to come before it as well as a slightly longer wheelbase.

Quote:
will give the car a larger trunk than ever before and one much more spacious than those found in rival hatchbacks
Quote:
In its attempt to make the new Golf more luxurious and refined, the car manufacturer will work tirelessly on the interior, eliminating any unnecessary switches.
Under the hood, the Golf will retain the current 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a turbocharged 2-liter diesel, which will receive 9% more power, but will be more environmentally friendly. In addition, the expected appearance of 3-cylinder petrol 1 litre power unit.

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

I was always fascinated with one product from VW from childhood and that is the Golf.

So approximately about 4 years and 11 months back, after selling the Mitsubishi Eclipse 4G, I picked a brand new Mark 7 GTI.

Right from the date of purchase I am impressed the way this car moves, the way it handles, the exhaust note and lastly the cabin space and quality.I was skeptical on the 'DSG' initially but now,I have fallen in love with the lightning quick shifts, which I dont think can be manually replicated.
I further improvised the performance by contacting APR guys, who remapped the car close to 300Hp.

Come JANUARY 2019,and my car will be 5 years old and hence plan to change it.
Will I go for the mark 8? Maybe the "R" variant or WAIT, maybe I have to consider its cousin, the RS3?

Do I see a few curves on a VW? Why what a shocking (but nice) surprise, after a decade of using a scale and set-squares to design boxy boring cars, the front and fenders seem to be a refreshing change.

The real tail-lamps are horrendous though, it has sling-shotted the model back by 2 decades. Something is off about the design, its either the photo angles or the slightly confused design (the ORVM mounting looks a bit aftermarket).

Whatever it is, Germany/Britain are obsessed with the Golf and this one will sell as much as before if not more.

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

Latest pics of the 2019 Golf almost undisguised.

Quote:
Pretty much the only camouflage on the latest test model is on the front and rear lights. It’s clear to see that the headlights, sporting a new double-hexagonal signature, have a much narrower profile than those on the existing Golf. Through the masking tape, it’s possible to see an extended tip that wraps around into the front wings.
Volkswagen has already confirmed a production schedule; the first cars are due to roll off the line at the firm’s flagship Wolfsburg plant in June 2019.
