Is it just me or is the C-Pillar extra wide?

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

Launch has been delayed due to some electronics problems. According to some german news papers, the first batch of Mk8 Golfs will be delivered with a reduced amount electronics onboard instead of planned full suite of Autonomous driving aids.

Quote:
The launch of the new eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf has been delayed until early 2020, according to reports from Automotive News Europe.

ANE quotes Volkswagen sales boss Jürgen Stackmann as saying: "We think it's better to come early next year with a full throttle offensive. It doesn't have anything to do with production. It's a sales decision since you don't try to put cars under the Christmas tree 9ie put the car on sale in December] when no one is paying attention."

VW had originally planned to launch the new Golf at the Frankfurt motor show. Instead Stackmann says the ID EV will be launched in Frankfurt. Stackmann also denied German media reports that the delay was a result of technical issues with the car's digital dashboard and infotainment architecture.

VW Golf on track for February launch despite software glitches

Link

Quote:
Volkswagen's new Golf is on track to go on sale in Europe starting at the end of February following delays caused by the hatchback's advanced digital features including over the air (OTA) software updates.

The Golf "lies within the target corridor when it comes to eliminating bugs," VW brand chief Juergen Stackmann said on the sidelines of the auto show here last week.

Stackmann said the launch of the Golf was scheduled for the ninth calendar week of next year, which begins on February 24. It will launch first in Germany, with other European markets following soon after.

In part due to its new online functionality, the eighth-generation Golf has been beset by software glitches.

"We've never hid the fact that software, an area of extreme importance for products in the future, is a serious challenge for us," Stackmann said. "We have our homework ahead of us, and the teams are under heavy pressure."

Pressed about the exact cause of the software glitches, Stackmann said a lot of the problems faced by engineers were because of the new Golf's ability to update its software over the air. This also makes it potentially vulnerable to hackers.

Previously the only way someone could gain access to key functions of a car was directly tapping into the controller network, or CAN bus.

"Due to their online connectivity there is a lot more software especially in the area of security, which is a real challenge since the car is no longer a closed ecosystem," Stackmann said.

Already now there are ten times more lines of code in the latest Golf than in a smartphone, but it is not just the complexity in the vehicle that causes problems.

"A customer might get angry if their smartphone doesn't work, but you do a debug the next day. A car is different -- if something goes wrong it can become critical, so the security requirements are far higher," Stackmann said.

Another complication is whether OTA software updates affect a vehicle's homologation, Stackmann said.

"You're adding content to a vehicle afterwards, and this is an area where we are working together with the type approval agencies to define these processes. It is new for them as well," he said.

VW originally planned to debut the Golf at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Instead the automaker will focus in Frankfurt on the public premier of the Golf-sized ID hatchback, the first model of its new ID family of full-electric cars.

German magazine Der Spiegel reported that only 10,000 units of the new Golf 8 would be produced this year at VW's home plant of Wolfsburg in Germany instead of the planned 80,000, an assertion Volkswagen confirmed in the magazine's report.

The Golf is Europe's top-selling passenger vehicle. The car's European sales fell 10 percent to 415,782 last year, according to JATO Dynamics market researchers.

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

Interiors of the 2020 Golf were teased at the Annual General Meet and hours later the real spy pic surfaces,

Quote:
Termed as a radical departure in design,it appears most of the controls will be integrated into a freestanding infotainment system. Volkswagen has cleverly integrated dual climate controls into a thin touch panel at the base of the display. There’s also a third panel between the climate controls and it could be used for adjusting the volume of the audio system.
Quote:
To the left, is a digital instrument cluster which is connected to the infotainment system via a gloss black surround with a wave-like design. The cluster looks pretty basic, but it shows a large speedometer and tachometer.

Below the infotainment system is rectangular air vents which feature metallic trim. This design curves around the dash and is echoed across the passenger side.

Elsewhere, we can see a new steering wheel and evolutionary door panels with aluminum trim

2020 VW Golf Mild the car’s new 48 volt mild hybrid system(new 48 volt mild hybrid Revealed.

Initially, the system will be offered on 1.0- and 1.5-liter EA211 evo engines that are paired to a dual-clutch transmission. The system will then gradually spread to other engines and models

Quote:
The Golf will be equipped with a 48V belt starter generator and a 48V lithium-ion battery. The belt starter generator features an integrated electric motor that provides recuperation and boost functions.

In recuperation mode, the system converts kinetic energy into electricity and this is stored in the lithium-ion battery that is located underneath the front passenger seat. This energy can then be used to provide an “electric boost” during acceleration.
Quote:
The mild hybrid system also shuts the engine off as soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator. Volkswagen says the engine switches “on and off without delay” and this process produces minimal vibrations. The Golf saves approximately 0.4 liters (0.1 gallons) of fuel every 100 km (62 miles).

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

Eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf has been spied undergoing testing.

Though evolutionary in design of today's car, it looks restyled though.

Turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, as well as natural gas, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains will be offered in the MK8.

MK8 reveal has been pushed to late this year due to development issues.

Initially i was thinking about getting a MK8 GTI but with all tech being added to this platform, i was skeptical and got a MK7.5 recently.

Reveal postponed to 2019 Autumn as Volkswagen bosses decided to focus that event ( Frankfurt Motor show) on its new electric offering.

Yeah, actually reports from April said the opposite. VW wanted to have a big launch in Frankfurt auto show and if they were not able to reveal MK8 Golf, they would go with their ID electric vehicle.

Re: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk8

According to some insider information, VW management is pushing the ID-3 and ID-Cross lauch ahead of the Golf Mk. 8. They have lost a lot of market to Zoe, Model 3 and co. With Hyundai and Kia very aggresively marketing their Electrics and hybrids, VW is feeling the "shock"

They have also run into some issues with the component suppliers which was reported in April. They could not achieve expected/targeted results with the level 2+/3 autonomy hardware. A lot of testing is going on, in an attempt to get it ready for launch by october.

The Golf GTE is expected to become the most efficient model in the range when it goes on sale in early 2020 as the all-electric e-Golf will no longer be offered for the eighth-generation — being effectively replaced by the ID.3.
