Renault: No cheat device found, but its cars exceed emission limits. Stock price takes a beating

Fears that Renault could face its own emissions scandal similar to Volkswagen’s “dieselgate” drove down shares in the French car-maker as much as 20pc, wiping almost €5bn off the company's market value in its worst day of trading in over 20 years.

French ministers have said that no “defeat device” or fraudulent software in Renault engines has been found.

OEMS are already under immense pressure to bring down emissions and series of such investigations is going to have an adverse impact on the entire industry.

Lets see how things pan out.

Well the news (http://en.mercopress.com/2016/01/15/...felt-on-shares) clearly says that Renault was not found emitting more than the stipulations.

Wow! Wiped out nearly 25% off the stock price.

Interestingly, 20% of Renault is owned by the Government which exercises a lot of influence over the car maker. Further, if it weren't for the support doled out by the Government (and Nissan's success ), Renault would probably have been wiped out by now.

Yes, there's no cheat device found. But that doesn't take away from the fact that its cars have been found to exceed emission limits:

Quote:
In October, Ms. formed the commission to test 100 cars across the country’s auto industry, including 25 models by Renault. Some cars tested by the commission, including one Renault model, exceeded legal limits on nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide, Ms. Royal said. Twenty-two cars have been tested so far and more will be.

VW saga opened up a can of worms, and managed to wake up the authorities across globe.

Other manufacturers would be cursing VW for this backlash.

Renault recalls Captur diesel models to fix emissions glitch

Up to 700,000 diesel owners also to be offered software upgrade.

We are not cheating, we are meeting the norms, and we are not trying to trick the consumer
Quote:
Renault is recalling 15,800 Captur SUVs to fix pollution-control systems and will offer voluntary emissions-system updates for about 700,000 vehicles as the automaker seeks to avoid a Volkswagen-type crisis.
The recall will probably be limited to the 110-hp diesel version of the Captur subcompact crossover

Renault faces new investigation over possible emissions cheating

Quote:
French prosecutors have begun investigating Renault over possible cheating in emissions tests, according to new reports. The investigation follows an earlier probe by French anti-fraud authorities who found abnormally high emissions from some of Renault's diesel engined cars.

The anti-fraud agency passed the case on to French public prosecutors last year, who have since passed it on to prosecutors in Paris with interregional jurisdiction over consumer affairs. Whether the investigation leads to a trial will be decided by the judges currently investigating the case. Renault's share price has tumbled sharply since the reports first came out.

I think the days of diesel cars in EU and US are numbered. Wonder if authorities in India will also start testing all the diesel vehicles sold in India.

Just ask someone to check the rear side of a Duster while driving, you will see how it smokes, I will share an image of rear bumper with Silver finish on my BIL's Duster which has discolored due to smoke, his vehicle is only 4 months old. Please wait till tomorrow.

Nissan in trouble.
South Korea finds Nissan guilty of using diesel emissions cheat device.

Quote:
The Qashqai models that have been affected were built in the UK and used 1.6-litre diesel engines from its sister brand, Renault. Qashqai sales in South Korea have been halted and 814 units have been recalled.

Carmaker denies any wrongdoing, but the South Korean government has ruled that the Renault-built 1.6-litre diesel engine cheated emissions tests.

Nissan has been found guilty of using a 'cheat device' on the Renault-sourced 1.6-litre diesel engine on the British-built Qashqai SUV sold in South Korea, the country's government has ruled.

The Govt. can easily answer with something like, "you might have sent us a rigged car for testing".
In all cases, the violator has neither the face nor the courage to ask this question.

How come a rigged car, when they have clearly stated that Renault has passed the surprise test, and NOT found emitting.

Renault in trouble over emission scandal.

Renault under investigation for emissions fraud- The Captur and Clio allegedly produce three times more NOx emissions than the rules allow.
Quote:
French investigators at the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) have been trying to figure out whether Renault misstated the performance of its diesel engines for getting the mills through environmental certification.
Quote:
According to the DGCCRF report, testing showed significant discrepancies between the results for Renault models in the lab and on the road. For example, the evaluations found a Captur exceeded carbon dioxide emissions rules by 377 percent, and the Clio VI was 305 percent over the limit.

These results make it possible to suspect a fraudulent device that specifically modifies the operation of the engine to reduce emissions of NOx

Renault's entire management team 'implicated'in emissions test fraud -Renault denies the charges.

Renault accused of cheating emission norms for the past 25 years.

Quote:
Renault's entire senior management team is implicated in an investigation into emissions test cheating, news agency Agence France-Presse has reported.

The agency says documents it has obtained show that the "entire chain of management", including chairman and chief executive Carlos Ghosn, were involved in the suspected fraud

Would be very interested to know who are behind finding the cheating emission norms. Not because they're effective or efficient, but want to know the single source from where all these originate. I've several questions in my mind...

1. Is this the same agency or team that found VW violating emission norms. If different, then, what this agency was doing for all the 25 years to find out the scandal now?

2. If same, then want to know why did it take so long for them to pin down Renault right after VW?

3. Last but not the least, who benefits from exposing such emission violations? Is there a pattern of targeting VW, Renault & is it predictable to know who will be next?
