VW to introduce new 1.5L petrol & diesel engines

Volkswagen will be introducing a new generation of direct-injection petrol and common-rail diesel engines that will (at least initially) share a displacement of 1.5L. The diesel engine is expected to be a replacement for the emission scandal-affected 1.6L EA189 diesel unit, currently used in a range of VW Group vehicles.

The engine in question is likely to be a 1.5L, 4-cylinder turbocharged unit, though it's unclear whether or not it’s a re-engineered version of the 1.6L TDI, like the 1.5L motor currently offered with the Polo and Vento in India.

The new petrol engine is also expected to be a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged unit that will replace VW's current 1.4L turbo-petrol mill. The new engines are likely to be presented at the Vienna Motor Symposium in April before entering production in 2017.

Will this petrol engine be available in India as well? 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo petrol sounds delicious!

How do you conclude that these updated engines will apply to India as well? The article in question talks of a 1.4 turbo which doesn't exist in India.

The 1.4tsi is used in the jetta and octavia. Makes somewhere close to 140bhp IIRC
