VW Taigun compact SUV project scrapped?

Mod Note: Our Volkswagen Taigun Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

In what appears to be a case of death before life, Volkswagen has reportedly scrapped the Taigun compact SUV project. The Taigun was a concept car that previewed a sub-4 metre SUV and while the production car was expected to rival the likes of the Ford EcoSport, the project has been axed as the car has been deemed too small.

Incidentally, a similar sentiment was expressed by VW India Brand Director, Micheal Mayer last year, who supports the idea of the compact SUV segment, but not if the vehicle is too small.

The Taigun concept made its debut at the Sao Paulo motor show in 2012 and was also presented at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. While the Taigun project may have been dropped, VW is working on a Polo-based SUV and could present a new concept at the Geneva motor show this year.

I got confused between the Taigun and the Tiguan . So are they launching the latter? Given how well the Mini SUV segment is doing, it might be short-sighted to scrap theTaigun.

Instead of Taigun, Volkswagen is working on a compact SUV, which is based on the Polo hatchback. The new SUV is expected to debut at Geneva Motor Show in March 2016. As for the new SUV's design, VW's T-Roc Concept unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show gives the best hint of what can we expect. The production model is expected to retain the rugged look of the concept will more practical add-ons. The new VW SUV is expected to rival against the Nissan Juke, Mini Countryman and the Suzuki SX4 in the international markets.

VW sees no value in the already crowded sub compact space of S/CUV's. so their line up will look like this.

1. Touareg
2. Tiguan and its variants
3. T Roc ( based on the Golf platform) - Due 2017
4. T Cross (based on the Polo platform and concept to be shown - Geneva Motor show, intended markets are Chinese,Indian, South American and European ) - Launch 2018

Re: VW Taigun compact SUV project scrapped?

Both the Taigun and the T-Roc look excellent.

Unlike the 4m sedan, the 4m SUV segment seems to be a great bet for the next few years. Easily worth a 1 lakh premium over, say, a Polo.
