On BMW's 100th Birthday, Mercedes invites BMW employees to discover the history of the automobile!

I never thought of Mercedes- Benz as cool. From what little I have experienced, MB generally comes across to me as wise, restrained and sane in their communication. But check out this cool and spunky invitation from Mercedes Benz to BMW employees:

https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/mer...art-to-munich/

On BMW's 100 anniversary they are inviting all BMW employees to discover the complete 130 year history of the automobile. Overall I found the message very respectful and acknowledging of the abilities of their competitor and yet in a way conveying that they consider themselves as the boss.

Classy & punchy, well done Mercedes! From their Indian Facebook page:

Re: On BMW's 100th Birthday, Mercedes invites BMW employees to discover the history of the automobil

This is kind of a healthy competition between the big 2 of Germany and they understand that perfectly because most German giants have an almost similar past in terms of ownership or funding or both. Mercedes Benz aka Benz Patent Motorwagen+Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft invented the first gasolene powered automobile, driven by the Fuhrer himself. BMW formerly Rapp Motoren werke/ Bayerische Flugzeugwerke Aktiengesellschaft was funded by the Nazi military to build aircraft engines initially but that stopped at the end of WW and they diversified into motorcycle building, the 3 wheeler car Isetta (licensed from Italy) and then the cars we know of today starting with the BMW Dixi.

VW was the pet project of the Fuhrer to enable common people to afford cars and drive them hence the name Folks-wagen Beetle their first car. AUDI aka Auto-Union formerly, used to make chassis and supply them to Gottlieb Daimler for his cars. Later Auto Union was merged with 3 companies holding various interests in automobile manufacturing hence the four rings logo. All these companies personify their tagline, Audi with Vorsprung durch Technik (progress with technology), BMW with Freude am Fahren (joy in motion) and Mercedes with The Best or Nothing.

The picture in the congratulatory ad shows the hind-side of the car. Why not the front? Subtle message in that too? Anybody's guess!

With this kind of positive attitude and healthy competition, the ultimate gainers are the people who drive the automobiles. The result is continuous advancement in technology and newer safety features making the driving more pleasurable and safer.

Porsche was slightly more cordial in their compliments. It roughly translates to:

“The future presents us with great challenges. We meet you with driving pleasure. Porsche bows 100 years ago moving automobile history and congratulates BMW sincerely for the anniversary.”

I feel its a bit cheap and snobby of Mercedes to be raining down on BMW's parade!
Of course, it should all be taken in the right spirit! But Mercedes can do better than this!

Porsche's ad was far more classy. A real congratulatory message.

Re: On BMW's 100th Birthday, Mercedes invites BMW employees to discover the history of the automobil

BMW and Mercedes occasionally have jabs at each other. Seems to be part of the game.

I remember BMW's ad in 2000 when they took over as engine supplier to Williams on the exit of Renault. The ad showed a pic taken much earlier on the race track with older models of BMW and Merc going head to head next to each other and went:

" We tend to meet from time to time, the last was in 1959."

The ad indicated BMW was bristling with confidence but they had actually grossly underestimated the Silver Arrows team.

History will tell you that BMW made an ass of themselves in those F1 outings with Williams and eventually withdrew from F1 after buying and selling back the Sauber team for various reasons in 2009.

This is true. However; even with all the trouble, a difficult and not particularly reliable car, I salute the brave man who took the wheel of this car and won a few races for the team. None of them were easy wins too. I am talking about Juan Pablo Montoya. Nobody liked him, I loved him.

I no longer follow F1 and it had to do with BMW's exit.

Kind of cheesy, but still subtle and classy.

Not something you can say of Audi's advertisements which target everything from Merc to BMWs to even Lexus, that too on the face directly.
Now that's real cheap.

That's a little too harsh on BMW. That BMW V10 was 'the most powerful' motor on the grid. The readings at most speed traps used to have those Williams far ahead of others on many tracks.

In fact, the fastest lap record and the highest top speed in F1 both belong to the Williams BMW of that era.
Quote:
Fastest ever lap – Montoya, 2004 Italian Grand Prix: 262.242kph

Highest top speed – Montoya, 2005 Italian Grand Prix: 372.6kph
BMW didn't win any championships but they did win multiple races and even became runners up in constructors to the all conquering Ferrari of Michael beating the likes of McLaren Mercedes during that time.

F1 is super competitive and very tough and what BMW achieved is highly commendable.

I agree that Audi has been cheap with their ad campaigns at times.

But it's not everyday that a company completes a 100 years! Mercedes should know.
And we all know about their awesome history! There is no need to gloat on your competition's face!

Mind you, i do feel that the ad itself is quite funny!
But just that Mercedes as a brand can be more classy like they've always been.
Let BMW have it's 5 mins of fame.
And leave the cheap potshots to Audi! (though Porsche from VAG did actually put the far more classy ad!)
