Honda starts sales of Fuel Cell Car in Japan

Honda has started sales of the Clarity Fuel Cell, its all-new fuel cell vehicle (FCV), in Japan.

Clarity Fuel Cell is the world’s first five-passenger FCV sedan. It measures 4,915 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, 1,480 mm in height and weighs 1,890 kg. The car has a 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen storage tank, which is claimed to provide a cruising range of approximately 750 km, an increase of 30% over the previous FCV model. The hydrogen tank can be refilled in approximately three minutes.

The car also features an electric motor that develops 130 kW and 300 Nm of torque. In combination with a portable external power output device (the Power Exporter 9000), the Clarity Fuel Cell can function as a power source on wheels. Honda claims that it is capable of supplying approximately 7 days’ worth of electricity to an average household.

For the first year of Clarity Fuel Cell sales in Japan, Honda will focus on lease sales, mainly to local government bodies & businesses. The company will collect information about the in-market use of the Clarity Fuel Cell as well as the external power output device, gather opinions & requests from customers, and then begin sales to individual customers.

Honda will start with a small production volume. The company will expand production eventually and is planning to introduce the Clarity Fuel Cell in Europe and USA before the end of 2016.

Re: Honda starts sales of Fuel Cell Car in Japan

Why do these companies have to style their EV/Fuel cell cars to look deliberately tacky and deliberately ugly. I know not everybody can come up with a cls or an DB9 and all, but please they could atleast make it look like a normal car. For somebody who is a car lover and doesnt see cars as kitchen appliance and is interested in buying a hydrogen car, this sort of repulsive styling maybe a big turn off.

Besides why would they make this new one look like the way it is when their old fcx is so much more better looking and elegant ? Are they blind?

Good. However i think Hydrogen fueled vehicles are 'in the future' and have been so for over thirty years. The effort required in setting up a fuel delivery system will be phenomenal. I personally think the approach using alcohol may be more realistic at least in India, as has been done for buses in Reykjavik. Also, a decent FCV using Hydrogen will require 'pure' hydrogen feedstock.

It's entirely intentional to:

- Make the car look futuristic

- Make it look 'different' from the others on the road

Shouldn't overdo it though. The 1st-gen Insight was unfortunately too different & ugly. The more 'normal looking' Prius destroyed it. Honda learned its lesson and the 2nd-gen was toned down compared to this ugly design:

Tesla co-founder trashes FCVs.

At first I thought it was just a rivalry between EV and FCV, but then he has some very good points.

Honda begins deliveries of fuel-cell cars in Southern California.

Article:

Quote:
Honda Motor said customer deliveries of its hydrogen fuel-cell car, dubbed Clarity Fuel Cell, began on Monday at select Honda dealerships across Southern California.

Honda is one of the latest automaker to bring a small number of hydrogen-powered vehicles to market amid increasing zero emission vehicle mandates from California and other US states.

The company said that retail leasing of the car is now available through Honda's 12 approved dealerships in certain California markets, including six in Southern California.

Honda said it would develop its fuel-cell vehicle dealer network, as public hydrogen fueling stations expanded across the state.
