re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

First look at Tesla Model 3’s charge port while supercharging - shows that while the charge port itself is much bigger than on Tesla’s other vehicles, it has the same connector and it doesn’t seem to be using any adapter.

The charge port also swings up instead of horizontally like on the Model S and X. You can see the hinge on the left of the connector.

Tesla Model 3’s charging technology – especially since it will be first of Tesla’s vehicles to be equipped with the company’s new 2170 battery cells.

Again, it doesn’t mean that it is the final design. The Model 3 release candidates are at difference stages of readiness and therefore, it’s not necessarily representative of the production version

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

I think Musk (Tesla) wanted to sell CBU imported cars in India at least initially. For that they don't need to source parts locally (Ex: Volvo, Apple) On the other hand, if Tesla want to manufacture or assemble their cars in India they can do that. That also does not have the clause of sourcing components locally.

These two policies are explained by some govt executives today.

But the problem here is, Tesla does not sell their vehicles through dealerships. They sell the cars directly to consumers through their own retails stores unlike all other car companies. They follow this method in all the countries they are operating. They are even fighting legal battles on this in some of the states in USA.

In India, for the single brand retail there is a clause of sourcing 30% of parts locally. This is the reason why Apple could not open their own retail stores in India. This is what Musk is talking about on Twitter.

Coming to India or not- Tesla Model 3 details trickle in.

Tesla releases some information of Model 3, surprisingly it seems like anti- Model 3, while promoting Model S!

Quote:
Over at Tesla Model 3 Owners Club, new information on Tesla’s upcoming electric sedan came pouring out via an inside source
•0 to 60 MPH In 5.6 seconds
•215+ Miles Of Range
•14 Cubic Feet Of Cargo Volume
•Length 184.8 Inches

I am *immensely* impressed by the GoI's clarification on this.

I sincerely doubt Musk was "misinformed"; he doesn't seem to be the kind of person to not be thorough.

Very likely, he just tried to find a reason to justify the indefiniteness in launching the Model 3 in India.

You're right about Musk not being misinformed, but he's also right about the 30% sourcing requirement. as explained by sri_Tesla:

To add to this, Tesla can have the 30% sourcing requirement waived / relaxed under the provisions of the FDI Policy on grounds that the products being traded are 'state-of-art' and 'cutting edge' technology and where local sourcing is not possible. This is of course at the discretion of the Government. Apple had also sought for such relaxation on these grounds but wasn't granted the same.

I would think that that Model 3 would fall under 'state-of-art' and 'cutting edge' technology, and hope that the Government thinks so as well. Quoting a Note from Para 5.2.15.3 of the FDI Policy

(v) Government may relax sourcing norms for entities undertaking single brand retail trading of products having ‘state-of-art’ and ‘cutting-edge’ technology and where local sourcing is not possible.

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Now TESLA Model 3 release candidate spotted with roof rails.

Quote:
the vehicle, which has a glass roof like all other Model 3 release candidate spotted so far, was spotted with a roof rack and a large box on top.

It’s not clear what the box is for. It could be to test the roof racks or it could be to test handling with added weight by simulating evenly distributed cargo, or something else
Quote:
The roof rack itself looks similar to the one for the Model S, which is adapted for a glass roof since all of Tesla’s vehicles are now glass or panoramic roof only. The Model 3 is expected to only have the glass roof option since Tesla is trying to minimize the number of possible configurations.

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

I was in the US recently and test drove the Model X.

The guys in the showroom mentioned Tesla will be coming to India this summer, and they have initiated the process of setting up the infrastructure (showrooms, charging etc.). He mentioned that the car will be fully built in the US and shipped to India. Not sure how reliable this information is though.

Any idea how much the model 3 would cost in India? $35K is roughly INR23 lakhs. If it is to be sent as a completely built unit, I suppose it will attract a very hefty import duty. and will cost 2-3 times the above number.

The test drive of Model X was amazing. I could experience the summon feature and auto pilot. They had also identified an empty mall where we could test the 0-60 in about 3 seconds acceleration.

It is disappointing to see India lag behind in electric vehicle options. There are quite a few in the US which look like real cars now (Nissan Leaf, Chevy Vold, Tesla, BMW i3). In contrast, we have a toy at a ridiculous price in India in the name of electric car (no offense to owners of that car). And the government talks big of being 100% electric by 2030, without spelling out a clear plan.

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

If we are planning to go 100% electric my 2030 then Tesla must set up shop here. Also, after the recent run in with Trump Mr Musk may be more inclined to open shot in India.

If we are going electric (starting 2020) then I will also suggest that those who can manage it to put off replacing their cars. I expect IC engine cars may go the way of Film cameras!

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Tesla Model 3 spied again - only 2 options at launch, exterior colour and tire size -18″ and 19″.
The Proto spied is with 19" size.
Quote:
When Model 3 release candidates were spotted while parked, Tesla went out of its way for people to avoid looking at the interior, but it was never clear what they were hiding since we had already seen plenty of prototypes around.
Quote:
Best guess was the user interface on the center screen and the information that it would display, like range and charge rate. That’s now everything but confirmed since the Model 3 spotted at the Harris Ranch Supercharger had no cover on the vehicle itseft, but engineers covered the steering wheel and center screen with a sweatshirt
Quote:
Looking at the back, we can also see the release for what appears to be a folding backseat, which should alleviate some concerns over the rear cargo space of the vehicle

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

As some of you may be aware Tesla's website had been taken booking for the model 3 from India and a handful of people did book the car as well with a $1000 deposit. Does anyone have any clue what would be the net import duty on these cars and how would the registration process go through?

re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Tesla updated its website this week - puts notification on upcoming test drives for Tesla Madel 3 in “late 2017".

Also quick to add a test drive in Model S or Model X if people want to more quickly get into a Tesla.

The car is charging at 70kW here, but the car was charging from the next supercharger over at 110kW. Superchargers sometimes split amperage between adjacent stalls, giving more juice to one car than another, so this may not be a full reflection of the top charging speed of the Model 3.
