Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

A good read by Autocar UK.

Analysis: Will the Model 3 make or break Tesla?

Quote:
So what has gone wrong at Tesla?

“The situation is really very simple,” said Peter Wells, automotive industry expert and professor at Cardiff Business School. “Tesla has seriously underestimated the challenges of bringing a new model to market in major volumes of production.”

They are in a really bad shape and bleeding money after Elon Musk boldly announced he would bring volume production forward by 24 months and, instead of making 500,000 units per year in 2020, pledged to hit that number in 2018.

One short cut understood to be causing trouble is the elimination of a whole stage of component development by going straight to production tooling without testing prototype parts first. Up to one year could be saved.

The highly automated body- framing station, where panels for the Model 3’s body-in-white are clamped together to very close tolerances before being welded together, is another area of production concern.

Sources suggest the supplier of this vital equipment has shipped the line before it was fully proved in its own factory, another short cut to save time. As a result, the equipment is not functioning as it should and the Model 3 cars built so far are essentially hand-assembled.

So what of the future?

Wells believes it holds three possible outcomes for Tesla: successful independence as a maker of a portfolio of technologies; or a merger with an existing car maker or industrial group; or, in his words, “to go horribly broke”.
Maybe only massive risk takers can become real disruptors. Time will tell.

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

TESLA MODEL 3 gets official EPA rating of 310 miles and 126 MPGe.

Tesla has been claiming a range of 310 miles (499 km) for the “Long Range battery pack” version of the Model 3.

Now the EPA confirmed the number with a city driving range of 321.9 miles (518 km) and a highway driving range of 295.5 miles (476 km) for a total combined range of 310 miles(499 km).

Tesla - The humane side,

Tesla Model 3 – cancer patient given early delivery.

Quote:
This test drive for the cancer-stricken man indeed took place, and Norman contacted Tesla for a possibility for him to take delivery of his Model 3 sooner. The next day, November 26, Tesla sent him an invitation. Delivery took place yesterday at Tesla’s Fremont delivery centre, and the cancer patient received VIP treatment complete with a private factory tour, led by Tesla president of sales and services Jon McNeil.

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

This test-drive report of the model 3 - http://money.cnn.com/2018/01/11/tech...iew/index.html, points out something that eats my head too. I would think electronic controls or anything that gives visual feedback to the driver should move to the MID/HUD. This seems to be going in the opposite direction!

Quote:
There is one major, and potentially dangerous, flaw. There are no gauges in front of the driver -- but that's not the problem, exactly. There's a big touchscreen to my right, and I had no problem at all glancing over to check my speed and other data. Lots of cars these days have center-mounted computer screens so moving that screen up, making it bigger and just putting everything you want to see there made complete sense to me.

What doesn't work so well is putting so many controls there, too. To do almost anything, from adjusting the mirrors to tweaking the car's speed while driving in Autopilot, I had to use the screen. There are two unmarked knobs on the steering that are involved in various functions but, before you can use the knobs, you have to poke around on the big screen first. It's annoying and most people will hate it. More importantly, it's terribly distracting.

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

The delivery delays seem to be taking its toll on the production team in Tesla.
Jalopnik reports two of the senior management members related to manufacturing have moved out of Tesla.

Quote:
Now two high-ranking employees involved with launching the Model 3 line left the company in recent weeks, Jalopnik has learned.

Jason Mendez, who joined Tesla back in 2005, worked an array of jobs at the company, most recently as senior director for manufacturing engineering, according to his LinkedIn profile. Mendez didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Along with Mendez, Will McColl, a former senior manager for equipment engineering, has also left the company. McColl couldn’t be immediately reached for comment, but he confirmed his departure on LinkedIn, saying he resigned from Tesla earlier this month.

“It was an action-packed 7 years of automation equipment design and I will truly miss the team,” McColl wrote. “I will treasure our countless moments of laughter as we fearlessly dismantled the edifice of ‘impossible!’”

A source familiar with the matter said both Mendez and Kroll were involved in the automation of the Model 3 production line, as well as the integration of German supplier Grohmann Automation, which Tesla acquired in late 2016. Another source confirmed the two aren’t listed anymore in the company’s employee directory.

The circumstance of their departures isn’t immediately clear—Tesla has said issues with the production line emanated from its Gigafactory battery plant—nor if they’re connected to the Model 3 issues.

Tesla declined to comment.

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Looks like Tesla needs to sort out teething issues.

The video points out issues which to be honest, are not expected of a Tesla, atleast by me.

Uneven panel gaps, pieces of insulation crudely stuck, and the likes.

This might be their cheapest offering, but they desperately need to up their game when it comes to reliability and quality. The engineering flaws are what worry me the most.

Hope these are only limited to the first few lot of cars..

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Not-so-good news for Tesla and Elon Musk, who otherwise seems to be rather successful with SpaceX.

Model 3 is fast turning out to be a chink in his armor.

Quote:
But the electric vehicle maker has now temporarily suspended production of the sedan to work out kinks in its assembly line.

Tesla (TSLA) said Monday that it's pressing pause in order "to improve automation" and deal with bottlenecks. The company declined to say how long the stoppage would last.
An interesting tweet from him:

Quote:
Musk, Tesla's CEO, tweeted last week that "excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake" and that humans are "underrated."

Tesla will start taking AWD Model 3 orders next week.

Musk added that production will commence in July and that the (optional) air suspension for the entry-level sedan will probably arrive next year

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Technical specifications for the dual-motor Tesla Model 3 derivatives have been announced.

Tesla will produce two all-wheel drive Model 3s, one focused on range and the other optimized for power and the other performance focused.

Range Focused:
will use the same 258 HP and 317 lb-ft rear wheel motor as the regular Model 3 and also utilize a second electric motor driving the front axle.
Quote:
Tesla hasn’t published a combined horsepower figure, but says this Model 3 variant will reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, a healthy 1.1 seconds quicker than the rear-wheel drive version, and will top out at 140 mph (225 km/h).
Performance focused:
Will be capable of launching from a standstill to 60 mph in a rapid 3.5 seconds and max out at 155 mph (250 km/h).

Re: The Tesla Model 3, a $35,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin

Tesla Model 3 Update :

Cancellations may now be outpacing new orders , 23% Of U.S. Tesla Model 3 Reservations Have Been Refunded!

The Tesla Model 3, a ,000 sedan. EDIT: Specs revealed & deliveries begin-secondmeasureteslamodel3reservations.png

Quote:
While the issue certainly makes for a dramatic headline, the cancellations won’t really affect Tesla for now. It’s still far from being able to keep up with demand. It had targeted producing 5,000 Model 3’s per week by the end of this month, a rate which would equal 260,000 units over a year.
Will MODEL 3 base variant be cheaper ?

Quote:
after conducting a teardown of several Model 3 units, a German company said it believes Tesla could reduce its cost to build significantly — as low as $28,000 ($18,000 for materials and logistics and $10,000 for labor). Tesla CEO Elon Musk later confirmed, on Twitter, that he believed this would indeed be possible
Quote:
What wasn’t disclosed is that this teardown was performed on the Long Range Model 3 (which is and has been the only Model 3 available to date). If a similar teardown took place on a base $35,000 Model 3, it would likely prove much less expensive to build.
