Mitsubishi admits to faking fuel economy data

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Wednesday says it found evidence its employees intentionally falsified fuel mileage test data for several models of vehicles.

The Tokyo-based automaker said Wednesday that the inaccurate tests involved 157,000 of its own-brand eK wagon and eK Space light passenger cars, and 468,000 Dayz Roox vehicles produced for Nissan Motor Co.

The problem was found after Nissan pointed out inconsistencies in data, the company said. Mitsubishi conducted an internal probe and found that tire pressure data was falsified to make mileage appear better than it actually was.

"The wrongdoing was intentional. It is clear the falsification was done to make the mileage look better. But why they would resort to fraud to do this is still unclear," company president Tetsuro Aikawa told reporters.

He and other company executives bowed in apology.

Aikawa said that although he was unaware the irregularities were happening, "I feel responsible."

The company said it would investigate whether data were altered for vehicles sold overseas.

Nissan said in a statement that it recently discovered discrepancies in data from Mitsubishi about light vehicles it provided while assessing the current model in preparation for its next-generation vehicle.

"In response to Nissan's request, Mitsubishi admitted that data had been intentionally manipulated in its fuel economy testing process for certification," Nissan said.

It said that after consulting the Japan's transport ministry, it told dealers to stop selling the affected vehicles. Nissan was considering ways to help owners of the cars already sold.

"Nissan understands and regrets the inconvenience and concern this will cause our valued customers," the company said.

Mitsubishi Motors struggled for years to win back consumer trust after an auto defects scandal in the early 2000s over cover-ups of problems such as failing brakes, faulty clutches and fuel tanks prone to falling off dating back to the 1970s.

VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

In what seems to becoming a chronic falsification by some of the top most automotive pioneers, Mitsubishi today confessed to have falsified fuel efficiency figures. The problem affected about 625,000 vehicles, including mini-cars eK Wagon and eK Space, and the Dayz and Dayz Roox, which Mitsubishi produces for rival Nissan. However the extent of the same is yet to be deciphered, and may filter on to other Mitsubishi cars.

Well this is how the corporates, leaders, celebrities work.

You are not cheating until you get caught.
Ethics and morals are for common folks who are destined to remain common folks forever.

Is this related to emissions in some way? Some calculation connecting fuel consumption with emissions and therefore coming up with a "CO2 score" ...?

Re: Mitsubishi admits to faking fuel economy data

Gosh, what are these stupid companies doing. This kind of cheating is done by school kids when it comes to homework; its depressing to see mature professionals indulge in such fraud. Lest we forget, this isn't the first time that Mitsubishi has cheated (link).

As if Mitsubishi Motors didn't have enough troubles already. They are a weakling globally and now this. I'm 100% sure other Mitsubishi models are affected and more skeletons are going to come out of the closet.

Hats off to Nissan for pointing the discrepancy out .

Re: Mitsubishi admits to faking fuel economy data

Taking the shorter route to beat the competition out. Well, why fiddle with something as valuable as reputation & trust just for some short term gains. The scars left behind are too deep to be healing away anytime soon.

But apart from Mitsubishi conducting tests in accordance to the standards at its own facility, why wasn't their claim validated by a public governing body like an automotive test agency?

Re: Mitsubishi admits to faking fuel economy data

Excerpts from BBC

“We still don't have all the details, but this seems to come down to the way Mitsubishi measured miles per gallon in the lab.
It's done on a thing called a rolling road, basically a treadmill for cars.
You can adjust how resistant it is, the way you'd adjust the treadmill in the gym to make it harder or easier to run.
It seems Mitsubishi deliberately used the wrong tyre pressures, as a way of cheating the treadmill test to get more miles per gallon out of the car. Artificially over-inflated tyres give better results.
Interestingly, it looks like another car maker, Nissan, found them out.

This isn't remotely as large or sophisticated as the cheat used by VW.”

This is the only part of the BBC article that I don't agree with. Cheating is cheating, whatever the scale. Whether you steal Rs. 1 or a million, you are a thief.

While the scale of fraud might be different for Mitsubishi & VW, they both tried to manipulate important numbers that impact the environment. Both are frauds.

Re: Mitsubishi admits to faking fuel economy data

Mitsubishi woes continue. Now admits 'overstated mileage' for more vehicle models.

Quote:
The ministry added it called on the automaker to report correct data to the government and suspend sales of the eight models, such as the RVR and Pajero sport utility vehicles and the Mirage subcompact, until it states proper figures in the catalog.
