The glass area seems to be the same as the concept. Not sure what motor1 seems to be smoking. There is no D-pillar in the design.

Also the rear legroom is worse than the previous gen. That dashboard appears tacky as well.
Too much plastic. The center console in the current v40 is brushed aluminum and stainless steel. Going to plastic isn't gonna cut in.

Perhaps this could be a pre-production car? I'm hopeful because Volvo really had two great releases recently with the XC90 and XC60.

Just noticed that the concept 40.2 shown originally (which I thought was a crossover sedan like the S60 cross country) is actually a hatchback. The boot seems to be one big hatch like the Skoda Octavia.

I sincerely hope they don't think in that direction. V40 was a sexy car and I just can't imagine the replacement to be based on that 40.2 concept contraption.

When we finally think they are going to do a moonshot with their stunning designs, someone from Hyundai infiltrates into Volvo design group. It still looks awesome, don't get me wrong. But it's a significant departure from their current design philosophy.

Even the sedan featured in the first page looks like a Chevy Camaro to me for some reason. Maybe the waist-line.

Any reason why they're pursuing a 3-cylinder option?

As far as design and styling is concerned, Volvo is knocking 'em out of the park!

That raised sedan's styling is certainly questionable, but the S60 Cross Country that I keep spotting around my house isn't too bad, if I'm honest.

The XC40, on the other hand, is quite a looker!

I like where Volvo is heading, in terms of design. "Quietly spoken class" is what Fifth Gear calls Volvo interiors, and it's hard to disagree with them.

All in all, modern Volvos make for compelling packages.

were only supposed to catch a brief glimpse of the 2018 XC40 through a teaser trailer we showed you earlier today, ahead of a full introduction on September 21, but apparently, Volvo Hungary lost the memo.

The firm’s Hungarian arm inadvertently (?) dropped an uncut version of the same trailer revealing the Swedish manufacturer’s new compact SUV.

The XC40 is the first car based on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture which is shared with Volvo’s Chinese owners Geely.

Inside, while sharing the same design language as the XC60 and XC90 with a large touch screen dominating the simplified and uncluttered center console, the XC40’s cabin gives the impression it’s more casual than its bigger siblings.

Volvo has previously said that it aims for the XC40’s available interior space to be vastly practical and functional. As an example, the Swedes mentioned that in order to provide better storage space in the doors, designers moved the speakers elsewhere to create enough storage in the door compartment for a laptop and a tablet, or a couple of water bottles.

The XC40 is Volvo’s first model with inductive charging for mobile phones and the first to offer a car-sharing option for family and friends.

The carmaker’s smallest SUV is aiming to pinch a slice of market share from the BMW X1 and upcoming Jaguar E-Pace, and is available to order now priced from £27,905.

Engines:

Three petrol and two diesel engines will be available at launch. The entry point is the front-wheel drive T3, featuring a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol with 154bhp that’s available with both manual or automatic gearboxes. The T4 and T5 use the same engine but uprated to 187bhp and 247bhp respectively, and both are only available with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox.

The two diesel options are also four-cylinder units, with the D3 offering up 148bhp and the D4 producing 187bhp. The D3 is offered with a choice of front or all-wheel drive, and manual or automatic gearboxes, while the D4 is auto and all-wheel drive only. Full powertrain specs are yet to be released. More efficient three-cylinder engines, plus a plug-in hybrid, are all expected to be added at a later date.

Subscription ( service?) launched

Care by Volvo is clearly aimed at the new generation of car buyers who shop online and have neither the time nor the patience to wheel and deal the old fashioned way. Volvo hasn’t yet released pricing for this program,
