4th-gen Mercedes A-Class teased before launch

Mercedes-Benz has released a teaser video of the exteriors as well as interiors of the 4th-gen A-Class. The car is scheduled to be revealed on February 2, 2018 in Amsterdam.

Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class-18c0081_01.jpg

The new A-Class is reported to measure 4,419 mm in length and 1,796 mm in width with a wheelbase of 2,729 mm. These are increments by 120 mm, 16 mm and 30 mm respectively compared to the current car. The boot space of the car has been increased by 29 litres and now measures 370 litres.

Going by the spy images and the video, the car gets a new low-set grille, that is similar in design to some AMG models. The car also gets all-LED headlamps, a revised bumper with a large air dam and two smaller side vents with horizontal slats, a downward-sloping roof and a strong crease running from the headlights to the tail lamps. The car is also reported to get 19-inch alloy wheels.

The interiors of the A-Class have also been revamped. The cabin is larger in size than the outgoing car and the dashboard is new with five circular air vents and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which can be controlled through a 6th-gen COMAND interface. A 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a new 3-spoke steering wheel has also been provided. Lower variants will either get a pair of 7-inch displays or one 7-inch and one 10.25-inch display. The car also gets MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) interface, navigation, 360-degree camera, adaptive high-beam assistant with city and highway headlight functions and ambient lighting with 64 colours.

The new A-Class is reported to be underpinned by a revised version of the MFA platform, called MFA-2. According to media reports, this platform gets aluminium parts along with steel. The car is expected to come in both - petrol and diesel versions.

Petrol engine options are likely to include a new 1.4-litre petrol engine (code name M282) developed along with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and a 2.0-litre petrol unit (code name M260). The 1.4-litre engine is expected to feature cylinder activation and come in three states of tune - 108 BHP (A140), 134 BHP (A160) or 161 BHP (A180). The 2.0-litre engine is also expected to come in three states of tune - 188 BHP (A200), 221 BHP (A250) and 302 BHP in the four-wheel drive AMG model. The AMG version is also expected to get a 48V electric system.

Among the diesel engines that are likely to be offered is a 1.5-litre (OM608) unit based on the OM607 motor supplied by Renault. This engine is expected to come in two states of tune - 94 BHP and 234 Nm of torque (A160d) and 114 BHP and 281 Nm of torque (A180d). The 2.0-litre OM654 unit that is found in other Mercedes cars is expected to be used in the new A-Class as well. It is also expected to come in two states of tune - 148 BHP and 320 Nm of torque (A200d) and 188 BHP and 400 Nm of torque (A220d). The A200d and A22d are expected to be offered in both - front and four-wheel drive configurations.

Transmission options are expected to include a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic.

It might be good to correct this bit.

It has been indicated that different versions will have different screen sizes.
Quote:
Standard A-Classes use two separated 7-inch screens. Middle versions use a flush-glazed 7-inch and 10.25-inch screen. And these top-spec models pictured get the flush-glazed twin 10.25-inch displays.

Re: Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class

Mercedes A Class unveiled.

Quote:
the new A-Class stand out is its progressive front end design, characterized by the low bonnet, flat LED headlights with chrome elements and the torch-like DRLs. Compared to its predecessor, the bonnet of the new model slopes down more heavily, giving the front end a more dynamic appearance.

Meanwhile, larger wheel arches (for 16 to 19-inch alloys) help the new A-Class look more purposeful on the road.
Quote:
The rear end design does its part too, giving off the impression that the car is more muscular and ready to pounce. As for the slim, two-section taillights, they seem far removed from the chunky aesthetic of the old ones.

Moving on to the interior reveals just how many big strides Mercedes have made with regards to this model. The cabin features a more modern, “avant-garde look”, as the automaker puts it, while the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard extends from one door to the other. While the ambient lighting could easily take your breath away with the 64 available colors, what really stands out about the all-new A-Class’ interior is its free-standing widescreen display.
Quote:
Future buyers can choose between the following three touchscreen display combos: either two 7-inch displays (17.78 cm), one 7-inch and one 10.25-inch (26 cm) display or two massive 10.25-inch displays.

Looks aside, uttering the phrase ‘Hey Mercedes’ will introduce you to the MBUX, as the new A-Class is the first ever Mercedes-Benz model to feature this completely new multimedia system.
Quote:
As for the engine range, the latest information talks about a wide range that includes seven petrol and four diesel options. These will include the brand-new turbocharged 1.3-liter petrol engine, developed in collaboration with Renault-Nissan, offered in three different power versions.

Other engine options will include a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit for AMG’s A35 and A45 versions. The former is expected to pack around 340hp while the range-topping 45 will go over the 400hp threshold. Mild and plug-in hybrid versions are expected to play a major role in the new A-Class and are expected to offer up to 31 miles (50km) of electric range.

Re: Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class

I'm gonna say it - It doesn't look good.

The front end is droopy, the sides are rather bland and the rear end is nothing special. I'd pick the current A over this one, any day.

On the other hand, the interior is fantastic. Mercedes are really outdoing themselves with the interior of their cars.

Wish they'd do something about the face though.

Re: Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class

It looks bland. The rear end is simply not attractive. Mercedes could have designed it better.

Though the interior looks good but I don't understand the need to merge the speedometer console and the infotainment screen. Looks really weird.

Re: Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class

When the 3rd Generation A-Class was unveiled, it made waves around the World, and that's due to the fresh design language which was a major departure from the micro-minivan-inspired 1st and 2nd Generation A.

This one, however, looks a rehashed version of the 3rd Gen, with pinched lighting fixtures and droopy grille and.. umm that's it!

The exterior styling will not send shock-waves like the 3rd Gen did, but the completely revamped interior is absolutely fantastic and in line with modern Mercedes interiors. Good job, Mercedes!

Re: Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class

I like the interiors, but im sure people who own the S & E Class' would be really angry seeing this design/cluster trickled down to the A

Absolutely, the grille especially has an Hyundai-sque feel to it; I wish the designers showed a bit more flair. The interiors look brilliant though - probably the best in its class.

That said, I feel the A-Class is going to find it difficult against the new 1-series. BMW may have lost its RWD advantage in the segment but it looks really good.

Re: Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class

I think Mercedes showcased the 2018 A Class over the weekend or late last week. At least that is what the official MB instagram profile seems to indicate. They have shared a pic of the car in red. Snipped this image from my feed.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class: New (W177) vs. old (W176)

The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class has divided opinion. Here is a closer look at just how this new W177-generation hatchback differs from its W176 predecessor!

Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class-merccombo790x474.jpg

Quote:
Up front, the biggest change is undoubtedly the adoption of new, more angular headlamps (which are smaller than before and come complete with a fresh daytime running light signature) and the implementation of what is essentially an inverted grille. The lower air intakes, too, are more aggressively styled, while the corners of the bonnet no longer meet with the headlamp units.

Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class-combo3.jpg

Spy Pics: 2018 Mercedes A-Class-combo4.jpg

Quote:
the most obvious change is the axing of the free-standing central display and the traditional, cowled instrument cluster in favour of a dual-display, widescreen cockpit (which we should point out will be offered in three versions) that does both jobs. Interestingly, the air-conditioning display has been integrated into the central screen, while the turbine-style air vents have been carried over, albeit in redesigned form

Overall the car looks a little too rounded now. The aggressive look has been toned down.

Basically they will have a hard time trying to bring in the aggression if they were to ever have an AMG version for an A Class with this design.

Will the dual digital display be standard or will it be available only on the top spec.
