Tesla Motors has officially opened its battery production facility called the Gigafactory. This facility is located in the Nevada desert, and has been built for in-house production of batteries in order to reduce production costs of Tesla cars.

Tesla started building the Gigafactory two years back. The construction is still only 14% complete, but the US-based electric car maker claims that 31 percent of the production facility would be completed by the second quarter of 2017. Once the entire facility has been built, the Tesla Gigafactory will spread over an area of 10 million square feet.

Tesla claims that the Gigafactory will help it reduce battery costs by more than a third by the year 2018. This will help the automaker to add more affordable cars to its portfolio.

At present, the biggest job at hand for the Gigafactory is the production of battery packs for Tesla's recently revealed car - the Model 3. The Model 3 is the company's most affordable car yet. Tesla engineers have used a new type of battery cell in it, which is different to the units used in earlier models like the Model S and the Model X. This new battery cell has helped the car maker to price the Model 3 at a relatively lower tag of $ 35,000.

Panasonic Corp., Tesla's long-term battery supplier, is also a partner in the Nevada-based Gigafactory. The Japanese electronics firm has invested $ 1.6 billion in the production facility. Panasonic is expected to start making battery cells by the end of this year.

Tesla is aiming to build 5,00,000 vehicles per year by 2018. The company's CEO, Elon Musk, had recently disclosed its future strategy, which stated its plans to venture into other vehicle segments like pickups, compact SUVs, and commercial vehicles.

The scale is actually enormous. I am actually scared for the traditional car industry in the coming days. Tesla has huge first mover advantage. Even if another company has better technology in the future, how are they going to match the scale of production? It will take them years to match or to a create a factory like this. Very very interesting days ahead.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says it’s entirely possible Tesla could build Gigafactories everywhere it needs batteries, including Europe, China, and India

Ultimately, wherever there is a huge amount of demand for the end product, and where the shipping costs are to become significant, then the obvious way to optimise that is to put the Gigafactory on the same continent, or at least within reasonable logistics range of the end customer.

Tesla to build world's largest lithium ion battery in Australia.

An Australian state will install the world's largest lithium ion battery in a "historic" deal with electric car firm Tesla and energy company Neoen.
The battery will protect South Australia from the kind of energy crisis which famously blacked out the state, Premier Jay Weatherill said.
Tesla boss Elon Musk confirmed a much-publicised promise to build it within 100 days, or do it for free.
The 100-megawatt (129 megawatt hour) battery should be ready this year

A toxic blaze at the site of Australia's largest Tesla battery project is set to burn throughout the night.
The fire broke out during testing of a Tesla megapack at the Victorian Big Battery site near Geelong.
A 13-tonne lithium battery was engulfed in flames, which then spread to an adjacent battery bank.
More than 150 people from Fire Rescue Victoria and the Country Fire Authority responded to the blaze, which has been contained and will be closely monitored until it burns itself out.
"If we try and cool them down it just prolongs the process," the CFA's Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ian Beswicke said.
"But we could be here anywhere from 8 to 24 hours while we wait for it to burn down."

Unfortunate accident, thankfully no harm to humans.
What is worrying is - there seems to be no means to put out these fires, rather they can only try prevent the spread and have to wait it burn out itself.
