Triumph to attempt new Land Speed Record at Bonneville

Triumph Motorcycles have officially announced that they would attempt to break the highest land speed record for motorcycles at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. The current record stands at 605.7 km/h, and was set in 2010. Triumph will attempt to surpass this speed with their Infor Rocket Streamliner, which will be ridden by famous Isle of Man TT rider, Guy Martin.

This isn't the first time that the British two-wheeler manufacturer is attempting to break the said record. Triumph first attempted the record in 2013, but failed due to an engine fire just before the official run. The company was set to return to the Salt flats for their second attempt in 2015, but their rider, Guy Martin, suffered a crash during a Superbike race just three weeks before the run. This forced the manufacturer to indefinitely postpone its record attempt.

The Truimph Infor Rocket Streamliner is 7.8 metre long and has a Carbon Kevlar Monocoque structure. It is powered by two turbocharged Rocket III engines that run on methanol. This setup can cumulatively develop a peak power of around 1,000 BHP at 9,000 rpm.

Quote:
TV star and road racer Guy Martin has become the fastest Triumph-powered man after taking the Infor Rocket Streamliner to 274.2mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats as part of his attempt to break the motorcycle land speed record.

Just after 8.30am, Martin and the team set off on the first run of the day, after a steady start, Martin accelerated the sleek looking streamliner to the record, rewriting Triumph history in the process.

Just after the two mile marker Martin came to a controlled stop near to the team’s base camp to be greeted by the news that he had broken the 46-year-old Triumph record.

“It’s good and we are moving in the right direction, but it is just one step on the way to what me and team are here to do,” he said.

Today’s record run is further proof of Martin’s growing confidence on the salt and commitment to breaking the World two wheeled Land Speed record. Throughout the week Martin has continued to impress everyone within the team with the speed in which he has been able to master the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner on the salt.

Each time Martin has sat in the streamliner on the salt he has been able to achieve the goals set by Crew Chief and the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner designer Matt Markstaller and his team with the required level of control.

Martin is aiming to break the absolute record, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, at 376.363mph.

Re: Triumph to attempt new Land Speed Record at Bonneville

So it didn't go as planned for Triumph. Poor weather conditions at the salt flats forced the team to postpone their record attempt by a couple of days. However, when the weather showed some signs of relief, Triumph decided to do a test run.

With Guy Martin at the controls, the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner pulled off the start line with great power. But as soon as the bike crossed the first mile marker, it hit a damp section of the salt. This caused the rear tyre to step out of the line, sending the bike tumbling down the strip. No images or videos of the crash have been released.

Fortunately, Triumph has mentioned that there were no injuries to Guy Martin. No comments have been made about the Streamliner though.

After the incident, Guy Martin said, "It’s all part the job boy, isn’t it? Feeling our way. I guess if it was an easy thing to do everyone would have done it by now. So we’ll get a plan sorted and get on with the next go at it as soon as we get the chance.”
