The 2017 Jeep Compass has officially been revealed in Brazil, ahead of its public premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The American automaker also announced the commencement of production of the Compass at FCA's new assembly plant in Pernambuco. The new SUV will be placed between the Renegade & Grand Cherokee.

Built on a stretched version of FCA's Small Wide 4x4 platform, the Compass looks like a smaller iteration of the Grand Cherokee. It also gets some edgier design elements from the Renegade. The front fascia features Jeep's trademark vertically slatted grille, though it is shallower in size as compared to other Jeep models. The tapering headlights with LED DRLs are inspired from that of the Grand Cherokee. The side profile gets squared wheel arches that house large alloy wheels. Other design elements include the contrast-coloured black roof, thick C-pillars and wider shoulder lines. The rear gets horizontal taillights, and an integrated roof spoiler.

The interior layout is also inspired from the Grand Cherokee. The Jeep Compass is expected to borrow some features from its elder sibling, including the U-connect infotainment system, an 8-inch screen, climate control and push-button start. Speculations suggest that the automaker might even introduce a seven seater variant as an option with the Compass.

Jeep has announced that the Compass will be a global product, and will thus serve more than 100 countries. There will be 17 different powertrain options on offer, in order to suit the requirements of different markets. FCA India has confirmed that the Compass will be launched here in 2017, and will be rolled out from the Ranjangaon facility in Maharashtra. Deeper details about the Compass SUV will be made available after its premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Bookings of the 2017 Jeep Compass have already started in Brazil, where it is priced between BRL 99,990 - 149,990 (equivalent to Rs. 20.49 – 30.72 Lakhs).

Expect the first made-in-India Jeep to be quite competitively priced, in the Tucson/CR-V range.

Jeep Compress?

So we can call it Jeep.zip? stupid:

It's good to see Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles concentrating on their Jeep division both in markets where they have a strong presence and barely any presence! Jeep is the brand that's bringing in the good news for FCA in many markets, and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes their their most prized possession soon.

Despite FCA's recent folly of statospherically pricing their imports, I believe they can taste decent success once they start churning out Jeeps locally. Having real Jeeps on sale is a breath of fresh air for the Indian market. If a mere pretender can milk this brandname to the hilt, then I see no reason why success should elude the real McCoy in India!

I think the prices will be in line with the BMW X1 and the like. Especially considering their pricing for the earlier launches in India.
That said, wonder when they plan to bring in the volume maker - the smaller C-SUV in the 15 to 23 lac range.

This is quite likely to be the layout for the India-spec model as well.

There are 4 variants of Jeep Compass available in Brazil - Sport, Longitude, Limited and TrailHawk.

Sport and Limited are available only with 2.0 L Flex fuel (gasoline, as the primary), mated to the 6-speed AT, while the TrailHawk is available only with 2.0 L TurboDiesel mated to the 9-speed AT. Longitude variant is available in both Flex, with 6-speed AT and TurboDiesel engines, with 9-speed AT. There are no manual transmission options with Jeep Compass.

All black interiors look pretty good. This seems to be loaded with features too. Hope they retain these when they launch it in India. I am finding it difficult to believe it will be priced below 20 lakhs.

PS: this looks like mini Grand Cherokee

The previous Compass was out of place in a Jeep line up IMO. But this one is very much a Baby Grand Cherokee and hold so much promise for Indian enthusiasts.

Lot of takeways in the above review.. most importantly "Trailhawk"!

Speaking to ET, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India president and managing director, Mr Kevin Flynn has announced that the company's first-to-be-made-in-India SUV will be the 2017 Compass, which was recently unveiled in Brazil.

The all-new "India-made" Jeep Compass will roll out from FCA's plant at Ranjangaon, Pune from the second quarter of 2017.

Previously codenamed "C-SUV", the new Compass will see high localisation levels and is likely to be priced below Rs 25 lakhs, according to unnamed sources. It will thus take on the BMW X1, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Audi Q3, when launched.

Quote:

"We have named our first to-be-India-made SUV as Jeep Compass which will be locally manufactured from mid-2017. The Compass will be our first localised Jeep product in India and will roll out of our Ranjangaon facility near Pune," Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India president and managing director Kevin Flynn told.

Flynn refused to comment on the price of Compass but had said that it would be priced competitive.

The USD 280-million Ranjangaon plant has an annual capacity of 1,60,000 units, which at present is being used by Fiat, he added.

Flynn termed the customer response to the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler as tremendous.

"Both models have given us a great head start here, as we anticipated," he said, adding in the run-up to the Compass launch, the company will "open 10 dealerships in nine cities by the end of 2016 and will have more dealerships in next year as our business moves into the new phase of growth".

These dealerships will be under the brand name of Jeep Destination Store, he said.
