Re: Trump effect: Ford cancels Mexico plant

Trump effect spreads across continents!

France's Presidential candidate Marine would seek Trump-style repatriation of car plants!
Quote:
Far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said on Tuesday she would seek to repatriate production of French motor vehicles and other industrial goods - just as President-elect Donald Trump hopes to do in the United States
Quote:
He (Trump) is putting in place measures I have been demanding for years
Quote:
Other candidates in France's spring presidential election have praised Trump's attitude on Ford, including Socialist Arnaud Montebourg and left-wing independent Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Here is a history book recommendation for you, and Matt Damon wasn't kidding about how one would feel after reading it...

Totally agree with your points here. This election basically exposed voters to two different lines of economics. A fair balance is required. Gosh even the media aint fair and it took Denzel to call them out. Great movie - good will hunting. Wached it again two days ago and Wow!

I wanted Berni to win, if it was not for the cheating done by the DNC. Trump took his template and ran with it. Just give Trump some time before writing obituaries!

Re: Trump effect: Ford cancels Mexico plant

Now BMW is warned by President-elect Trump.

President-elect Donald Trump has warned the United States will impose a border tax of 35 percent on cars that German carmaker BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the U.S. market.
Quote:
A BMW spokeswoman said a BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosi would build the BMW 3 Series starting from 2019, with the output intended for the world market. The plant in Mexico would be an addition to existing 3 Series production facilities in Germany and China

Even with a 35% border tax, the cars will be cheaper if made in Mexico due to high labour costs in the US.

50 years ago, when the US was the world's largest manufacturing hub, they pushed for globalisation. Now other countries are catching up with them, so they are pushing for protectionism.

But ultimately, only US will suffer. If they put up border tax for imports, other countries will reciprocate. This will cause further increase in production costs in the US and affect the quality of lives of ordinary US citizens.

GM, Hyundai and others follow suit. GM to now invest $1 Billion in US, Toyota to invest $10 billion over 5 years while Hyundai to invest $3 Billion. Looks like Trump effect is triumphing even before he swears in on 20th. Wonder what will be the case after he actually swears in an takes charge.

He's threatened German manufacturers too but they have not yet relented to the pressure.

Re: Trump effect: Ford cancels Mexico plant

When somebody like Trump makes hard decision based on his limited understanding of globalization, it leads to situations like this.

Decision: Trump wants to save American Jobs and put American national interest first. So he stops Singapore based Broadcom from taking over Qualcomm.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/12/1...ional-security

Result: Qualcomm starts laying off 1000s of US employees, mainly in their US Headquarters. Obviously, these jobs will now go overseas. When the operations go overseas, there is no national security either.
