Unique: Pay $1500 & drive Cadillacs all month long

General Motors has launched a unique service called Book by Cadillac in the United States. As part of this service, users need to pay a monthly fee of $1500 to keep any Cadillac car for a month. Additionally, users can also swap their cars at any point of time and request for a new model. The service is currently being run as a pilot project in the New York City.

The said $1500 monthly fee also includes insurance and regular maintenance of the car, thus relieving the customer from any ownership-related responsibilities. Users opting for the service will also need to pay a one-time fee of $500 to sign-up for the service.

The biggest talking point of the Book by Cadillac service is the ability to swap cars. A user can switch car 18 times per year, without paying any extra charge. Request for a car swap or any other services can be made through a dedicated smartphone app. General Motors also claims that every time a new car is delivered to a customer, all settings (seat position, saved radio stations, etc.) will be set-up as per the customer's requirements. All cars engaged in the Book by Cadillac program will be top-end variants of the latest model year.

If the pilot project turns out to be successful, General Motors might expand the service to other brands in its portfolio.

It is not any Cadillac, you can get only the luxury car portfolio with this program

Which includes Escalade, All V series, CT6
does not include normal CTS, ATS, XT5

This is very interesting! This kind of a setup takes leasing to another level.

What I'm curious about is, if there's a limit on the no. of miles you can drive for the time you have a particular car.

Typically you can get a BMW 5 series on lease for $ 500/month lease for a three year period. A big limitation is the 10,000 miles/year limit (often, not enough for the amount of driving a typical American does). Insurance is extra.

If this miles factor is favorable, this initiative will find a lot of takers. Sure, it costs quite a bit but you get top variant premium cars and you get to change them as often as 18 times a year!

I do wonder why they chose NYC to launch this though; most residents, even the wealthier ones, choose public transport due to the horrible traffic and lack of parking, at home and office.

That is the point of picking NYC. $1500 in NYC is just cost of good parking spots. After the drive you could call Cadillac and the they pick the car up and keep it.

.... So I could drive to work, ask Cadillac to pick up the car from work at 9am and ask them to return it to me at the reception @ 5pm.

Definitely one of the more promising ideas from a car manufacturer. The industry is flummoxed by the rise of app taxis, car-sharing services & self-drive rentals. This is an idea that will definitely be picked up by other manufacturers.

Just wish that the pricing was reasonable. $1,500 / month is a lot of money for a Cadillac, no matter which model. You can lease an S-Class for a couple of hundred bucks lesser than that.
