Mercedes-AMG Hyper car - Project One with 1,000+ BHP

For quite a long time, there has been an unanswered question, why Mercedes Benz is not producing any super sports car in spite of their dominance in F1? Something which puts them right in the league of Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren etc.

Finally, few months back AMG broke the news about their all new AMG hyper car – fondly “code-named” as project one. (P1 – Sounds like Mclaren P1). AMG’s 50th birthday celebrations will culminate in the reveal of the 1,000bhp-plus Project One hypercar at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Few details confirmed so far are;
• Mid-engine layout
• Upcoming model will get 1000+ bhp and a F1 derived powertrain.
• An all-wheel drive system with an electrically driven front axle- AMG torque dynamics.
• 300 numbers will be produced, at 2M Euros per piece. (Rumors says, it is all sold out).
• Will also have an all electric range of 25Kms.

With this kind of figures on board, AMG will put their car directly competing with the holy trinity of hyper cars – The LaFerrari, The Porsche 918, & the McLaren P1.

Interestingly, Aston Martin and Red Bull along with Adrian Newey is working on AM-RB001 which also confirms to have a F1 derived power train in it and boasts similar figures.

The first look of the car’s overall design. Note the roof mounted air scoop!!

The second tease came in CES-2017. It seems AMG and Mercedes want to take their tease game to next level!!

re: Mercedes-AMG Hyper car - Project One with 1,000+ BHP

Boy oh boy! I knew it wasn't going to be long before one of the other more mainstream manufacturers tried to produce a Hypercar.
With Mercedes' AMG division at the helm of the development of this car, and considering what they've done with the SLS AMG & AMG GTS, I think this one is going to be a stonker

The benchmark has already been set so high by the holy trinity...let's see if Mercedes can up the game with this one.

Exciting times ahead for the Hypercar fans

Cheers

Mercedes-AMG reveals Project One hypercar’s F1-spec powertrain

Quote:
As we approach the debut of Mercedes-AMG’s “Project One” at September’s 2017 Frankfurt auto show, more and more details on the hybrid hypercar are surfacing.

AMG used this weekend’s 24 Hours Nürburgring to provide a sneak peek at the car’s layout and powertrain.

As we previously learned, the powertrain is lifted straight out of one of the Mercedes AMG Formula One’s team championship-winning race cars and augmented with an electric drive system on the front axle for all-wheel drive. Peak output is expected to be around 1,020 horsepower.

Around 750 hp of that will come from the internal combustion component alone, in this case a 1.6-liter turbocharged V-6 with the ability to rev to 11,000 rpm and thermal efficiency exceeding 40 percent (most performance cars are in the 20 percent range). The electric drive system will make up the rest.

At the rear of the car, one electric motor (MGU-K) will be connected to the engine via the crankshaft and help power the rear wheels, as well as recapture energy. A second electric motor (MGU-H) will be integrated with the turbocharger to help spin its compressor as well as recapture wasted exhaust energy. So far the setup is the same used in F1.

But the Project One will feature two additional electric motors at the front axle to create the aforementioned all-wheel-drive system. F1 cars don’t have this, though the LMP1 Hybrid prototypes competing in the World Endurance Championship do. Current cars like the Acura NSX and Porsche 918 Spyder also benefit from a similar setup.

Interestingly, the two front-mount electric motors will power the car in electric mode, making it a front-driver when zero emissions are required. AMG is estimating a range of approximately 15 miles on a full charge. The batteries, mounted at the front to aid weight distribution, are also of the same technology used in F1. Meanwhile, the transmission will be an 8-speed automated manual.

Everything will then mount to the tub, forming part of the load structure of the vehicle, another practice common to F1. AMG won’t mention the weight of the car, though this figure is expected to come in under 3,000 pounds

The article goes on to quote that the starting price, not that it matters much for the car's potential buyers, is 2.27 million euros (approximately $2.54 million).

I know they're trying to highlight the engine/chassis etc, but those rims look gorgeous. Also that rear exhaust makes it look like the vehicle will have a large rear overhang.

This looks like the spiritual successor to the SLR finally, in terms of power and engineering.

The SLS AMG was more of a muscle car and the GT is well, a GT and smaller than previous ones, this one seems to be powerful enough to take on the P1, LaFerrari.

BTW, that exhaust!! Looks better than the multiple small exhausts on other AMGs

This basically is an F1 car powertrain in a road car with added AWD. I'm guessing its built to smash all lap time records. Apparently it requires an engine rebuild every 31000 km.

It needs quite a lot of effort to engineer a road legal, emission proven vehicle with such a power train.

Let's wait and watch if it can smash the recent McLaren P1 LM timings!!

Reports says 31,000 miles,
still it is surreal when compared to the previous engines that were designed for the sport, which could not last even 25% of that.

Hypercars like the Project One do not get driven that much, and few of them manage to reach 30,000 miles on their odometers even after several years of "usage." There are exceptions, of course, but this will not be a problem for those who can afford a hypercar

Re: Mercedes-AMG Hyper car - Project One with 1,000+ BHP

I almost feel slightly underwhelmed by the design. It's almost unassuming that face. For nigh on $3million I don't want my car to look unassuming. Also, does anyone else get the vibe that it definitely resembles the Noble M600 in side profile at least?

Well, no, it doesn't look all that similar. The subtle flare over the wheels, the massive air intakes, the vertical F1 style Fin and smooth flowing shape and many more differences can be clearly seen.

In the way you describe, all sports cars with a flowing shape, would look similar. It's like saying all Ferraris look the same. But, it isn't.

The Noble looks like it was made in a garden shed, whereas the 'One' looks like it is made in the same Lab, where Hamilton's GP machines are built.

Imagine this being driven as a safety car in F1. Was expecting a ariel atom like body, but this looks absolutely gorgeous.

Re: Mercedes-AMG Hyper car - Project One with 1,000+ BHP

I was expecting shock styling out of Mercedes for this car. It turned out too ordinary. When Ford GT can accentuate its design to show how compact its engine is with its massive flying buttresses and Valkyrie had set a tone of lithe design, I was expecting a much more praying Mantisy design out of AMG. This one looks too portly in comparison. But there are some details that come out of the best car in the world. The Mclaren F1.

Below is a snapshot of AMG Hypercar with the Mclaren F1 LM
Mercedes-AMG Hyper car - Project One with 1,000+ BHP-untitled.jpg
Check out the similar silhouette.
3 air scoops above the front wheel arches
Central air intake on the roof

I know most supercars would have similar design language and basic elements of this design are nearly univesal. But this design has redeemed itself for me because of its similarity with my dream car.
