Mitsubishi previews the Eclipse Cross SUV

Mitsubishi has embarked on the journey of its future which involves focusing on SUVs. As part of this strategy, Mitsubishi has previewed the new Eclipse Cross SUV, which will be launched during the Geneva motor show coming up in a week.

The Eclipse Cross borrows its name from the Eclipse, a popular coupe sold by Mitsubishi. That said, the similarity ends there.

The Eclipse Cross is stated to come with a direct-injection turbocharged 1.5 litre petrol mated to a CVT and a 2.2 litre diesel engine matched with a 8 speed automatic transmission.

Externally, the Eclipse Cross seems to carry over the family face 'Dynamic Shield' design philosophy now seen in the Pajero Sport and the refreshed Lancer. Dimensions measure in at 4405mm length, 1805mm width, 1685mm height and riding on a 2670mm wheelbase.

The Eclipse Cross is due to be launched in Australia, North America, Japan as well as Europe.

Ben

Am keenly awaiting the return of the Boxy SUV. Simple clean elegant straight lines like those beautiful 1970's Range Rovers and similar.
These excessively curvy SUV's and Crossovers are somehow kind of "egg shaped" and "elliptical" and too rounded for my taste.
Thats one reason I love the looks of the 2015-2016-2017 Jeep Patriots and Jeep Renegades. And don't like for example, the Jeep Compass, which is very rounded overall and like a mini Cherokee which is also too rounded for my taste.

How about this, Shankar?

Sadly, we have to accept the reality that the boxy shaped SUV probably ain't coming back, thanks to pedestrian safety norms, as well as FE concerns. Even the Nissan Patrol now looks like a giant egg, what with the rounded edges and face. This is now the age of the pseudo-SUV or the little SUVs, and with that being the biggest market out there currently, its not surprising to see this is where Mitsubishi are taking their first shot at.

IMO, the Grand Cherokee is a good mix of the new blending with the old, big SUV. Has to be seen how long before it loses those looks.

Look up a Chevy suburban, Cadillac Escalade or Ford Expedition. As boxy as it can be.

Sad to see the name of a JDM legend now being used as a marketing ploy to sell an automotive equivalent of a dishwasher. Shows how far Mitsubishi has fallen.

Re: Mitsubishi previews the Eclipse Cross SUV

Mitsubishi plans to launch the Eclipse Cross in India, some time by 2020. It is based on a modified version of the platform that underpins the Outlander, which was officially launched in India yesterday. Globally, it comes with 1.5 litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel engines mated to a 8-step CVT and a 8-speed slushbox, respectively. Both the engines are said to be BS-VI compliant and could make their way over here. The petrol comes in both FWD and AWD layouts, whereas the diesel is offered only in the AWD guise.
