If it is based on the i20, it has to sit below Creta. But anything below Creta (of length 4270mm) should be a sub-4m car, which doesn't seem to be the case by seeing the pics. So, it should be on the i30 platform, IMO. The Carlino concept which may be based on the i10 / i20 should be their sub-4m crossover to fight against Brezza.

Price wise, Kona will be positioned above Creta. This seems to be a competitor for the upcoming Renault Kapture / Nissan Kicks / Suzuki Vitara with all those 2-tone exterior, flared wheel arches and bling in place.

Any idea if this is headed to India? IMO Hyundai could position the Kona neatly between the Creta and Tucson and it would find takers in India who want something unique. Moreover, they already have the engines and transmissions ready.

Considering how pro-active Hyundai is today, I wouldn't be surprised to see this coming to India in the mid-term future priced at 18-20L on-road.

Hyundai's latest crossover KONA revealed. Planned for sale in Eu and US, will go on sale in Korea later this month.In Hyundai's line up the Kona will slot in beneath the mid-sized Tucson. Unveiled in Korea while the European launch will happen later in the day!

The Kona measures 4165mm long, 1800mm wide and 1550mm tall, while the wheelbase stretches 2600mm. Under the bonnet is a range of petrol and diesel engines, though some are for select markets only.

Kicking off the range is a 2.0-litre MPI naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, developing 110kW of power and 179Nm of torque.

When mated to the six-speed automatic transmission, the Kona 2.0 MPI can shuffle from 0-100km/h in 10 seconds flat and reach a top speed of 194km/h

Some unique design elements being used, Kona uses a split-light design , the top row of LED running lights incorporate the crossover’s turn signals, while the larger housings below hold the Kona’s LED headlights. black cladding is present on the front and rear fascias, as well as the body sides.

Around back, slim taillights are reminiscent of other recent Hyundai designs, though the turn signals and reverse lights are housed in a separate cluster closer to the bottom (weird). The Kona also gets a two-tone look, with a contrasting black roof, though it’s unclear if other roof colors will be available

On the base end, the Kona will have a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine, with 147 horsepower and 132 pound feet of torque. It’ll be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and Hyundai says this model will sprint from 0-62 miles per hour in 10 seconds, with a top speed of 120 mph

A more powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four will also be on offer, with 175 hp, 195 lb-ft of torque, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission

Kona buyers in Europe can also spec a 1.0-liter turbocharged inline-three with a six-speed manual transmission, producing 118 hp. In addition, Europe and other global markets will have a 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel option.

Depending on the drivetrain, the Kona can be fitted with two different rear suspensions. With front-wheel drive, there’s a torsion beam setup, but opting for all-wheel drive lands you a more sophisticated multi-link rear suspension

Inside, Hyundai says the Kona will deliver best-in-class interior space, with more headroom than any of its competitors. The rear seats fold flat, and there’s a two-level load floor in the cargo bay. On the technology front, the Kona will come packed with all the latest and greatest features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, housed in a choice of five-, seven-, or eight-inch infotainment displays. Hyundai will also offer a new head-up display that projects graphics onto a dash-mounted glass panel

Hyundai at the launch event of Kona confirmed that they will release an EV version of Kona with range of 390KM (242 miles) by middle of next year . With the release of Ioniq EV sedan, Kia Niro EV and this Kona EV Hyundai is definitely being pro active in adopting EV revolution.

With the fast changing dynamics of auto industry currently, I am wondering if it will be wise move on part of Kia and Hyundai to have separate assembly lines for EVs in KIA's new plant at Andhra Pradesh
