Volkswagen CEO: ‘Anything You [Tesla] Can Do, We Can Do Better’:)

Volkswagen Group ranks among the largest automakers in the world, and for this reason, the company believes it has the resources to leave Tesla in the dust.

VW is comprised of a myriad of companies, all of which will move to electrification, and all of which can share architecture, components, and assembly. The automaker won’t truly break into the EV market until 2019 or 2020, but plans to sell one million EVs by 2025 - that is 5 years behind Tesla's plan.

VW Group has shown numerous electric concept cars from its Volkswagen and Audi brands; the first to enter production will be the 2019 Audi e-tron, an all-electric crossover utility vehicle

Audi is getting serious about its portfolio of battery-electric models and is set to launch three electric vehicles over the next three years.

There will be two mid-size crossover models and a more compact premium car

1.Audi’s e-Tron Quattro:

The Audi e-Tron Quattro, coming soon to India-.jpeg

Will hit the market in late 2018 as the company’s first model in its next-generation fleet of all-electric vehicles. The base model is likely to be priced starting at around $60,000.

2.Audi e-tron Quattro Sportback:

The Audi e-Tron Quattro, coming soon to India-1.jpg

Shown as a concept at the Shanghai Motor show, this is a sportback version of the above, with the interiors being cleverly differentiated from the e-tron Quattro. Pricing of the Sportback will be slightly above that of the regular model, carrying a premium of about $5000. It will appear on global markets in 2019

3.Audi e-tron premium compact ( Rival to Tesla Model 3):

The Audi e-Tron Quattro, coming soon to India-2.jpg

This as-yet-unnamed premium compact car will be slightly bigger than the A3 sedan, and it will be the first Audi based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric (MEB) architecture. It’s fitted with two electric motors, one up front and one in the rear; power output in top configuration will be around 300 horsepower, but there will likely be lesser entry-level configurations. A range of around 300 miles is a given.

When it comes to market in late 2019 as a 2020 model, we expect an entry price point of less than $50K; it will directly target the Tesla Model 3 (if Tesla manages to get it to market by then).

Will look like a variation between the Volkswagen I.D. Crozz and the Škoda Vision E.

the E-Tron Sportback will morph into one in 2019. It’s more than just a rumor as the announcement was made by Audi when the concept received its world premiere in China. It will come out approximately one year after the E-Tron Quattro and will serve as a sleeker “coupe-SUV” spin-off.

Production All-Electric Audi E-Tron Quattro begins road tests,

Quote:

No specifics of the electric powertrain the production E-Tron is going to use is known yet, but in the concept shown it used three electric motors (one at the front and two at the rear) for a total output of 429hp and over 590lb-ft (800Nm) of torque. There was also an “overboost” function that pushed power up to 496hp for short periods of time.
The concept also used a 95kWh battery pack that allowed it to travel over 310 miles (500km) on a single charge.

Audi is planning to introduce the all-electric E-Tron to the market in 2018.

Audi is taking deposits from potential customers for its new e-tron full-electric SUV in four European markets

Quote:

Audi is taking deposits from potential customers for its new e-tron full-electric SUV in four European markets. The e-tron SUV is the first model in Audi's electric car product offensive as the automaker seeks to restore its technology credentials badly dented by its involvement in parent Volkswagen Group's diesel-rigging scandal. It will launch later this year as a rival to cars such as the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace.

Audi has already received 5,000 orders in Norway, Europe's largest EV market, where potential buyers can reserve the car for 20,000 Kronor (2,000 euros), an Audi spokeswoman said. Audi dealers in Switzerland, Austria and Belgium, where the e-tron will be built, also are accepting reservations. Audi's local sales organizations in other markets, such as Germany and China will decide separately when to start taking orders, the spokeswoman said.

The e-tron will have a range of 500km (311 miles) and fast charging. Its drivetrain will have a maximum output of 496 hp and generate as much as 800 Newton meters of torque. This performance allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds. Top speed will be 210 kph (130 mph). Its 4880mm length positions the SUV between the Q5 and Q7 and its roofline is lower than both those models.

The e-tron SUV is the first of three full-electric cars Audi will launch by 2020. It will be unveiled in Brussels at the end of August in an event Audi calls a summit, CEO Rupert Stadler told reporters earlier this month. The automaker held a similar unveiling for its latest A8 sedan in Barcelona last July.
The second EV, which will be called the e-tron Sportback, will launch next year. The car will be a fastback model sitting lower than an SUV but with a more elevated driving position than a standard hatchback. Both of the cars are based on Audi's MLB platform and will be built at the automaker's factory in Brussels.
The third EV will be compact model built on VW Group's new MEB electric cars platform. It will launch in 2020, shortly after VW brand's MEB-based I.D. compact hatchback. No production location has been announced.

Audi plans to launch 20 electrified models by 2025, of which more than 10 will be full-electric models. Starting in 2021, Audi will add EVs built on a new premium electric platform it is developing with Porsche. Last November Audi said it will build two full-electric cars at its main plant in Ingolstadt, Germany. Stadler has also said the company will build electric vehicles at its plants across the world, including sites in Mexico and Hungary.

VW have the wherewithal to take on the competition. However, remember Tesla have been in the game for some time, which for VW it will be the first venture. I think it may take a generation or two for EVs to mature.

Audi e-tron Electric SUV Starting Price Revealed, would rival Tesla Model X.

The car is set to enter production at Audi’s carbon-neutral plant in Brussels in the next few months in order for deliveries to start in the European market at the end of 2018.

Bookings open and gets ~ 3000 from Norway. Though smaller in size than the Model X, Audi will rely on its brand pull for garnering volumes.

Starting at a price of €80,000 in Germany (~ $98,535 in US) it undercuts the Model X ( 75D) . Tesla's Model X starts off at $110,200 ( not considering Tesla's fuel savings calculation)

One gets to see how archaic VW's highly celebrated 'R&D' prowess is with it's recent EV designs!

Time and again people have questioned what VW's massive research spend actually equates to in the real world, they spend more on R&D than Apple, Google, Tesla etc..... but the results simply show how inefficient they are and how short sighted their platforms are. I know Audi posts massive profits every year but one needs to wonder wht the VW brand continues to underwirte the losses. So setting aside the accounting discrepancies let us take a closer look at the recent EVs.

For a company with such 'R&D' expertise, why have such long massive bonnets for? The biggest advantage of designing an EV is that they do not have to worry about the 150-200 kgs of engine in front of the car. The package is highly flexible with battrey packed under the car for low centre of gravity and the power trains pushed to either end, creating massive space in the middle.

Why exactly does VW have long bonnets? Well because they still rely on the IC engined platforms for their EV's? They cannot do a cab forward on the E tron suv because it used the same MQB platforms used on a diesel touareg! So does this mean lower costs, no it is as pricey as a tesla or an upcoming iPace!

What VW really reminds you of today is the American big 3 of the early 80s. Massive organizations that were completely blindfolded by their sheer ineptness in thinking forward.

Audi E-Tron To Debut On August 30.

Quote:

will happen on August 30 on the occasion of the Audi Summit in Brussels, Belgium where the model will also be produced. The fully electric E-Tron crossover will usher in the company’s new ambitious EV plan to sell around 800,000 electrified cars per year by the middle of the next decade.

Audi e-Tron Electric SUV Gets Tested.

Quote:

Auto TV gives a more detailed look at the entire event where various journalists are seen hitting Pikes Peak with the Audi e-tron. The object of this exercise is to test the e-tron’s braking recuperation system

Quote:

The recuperation system contributes to up to 30 percent of the electric SUV’s range. It involves both the two electric motors and the electrohydraulically integrated brake control system. For the first time, three different recuperation modes are combined: manual coasting recuperation using the shift paddles, automatic coasting recuperation via the predictive efficiency assist, and brake recuperation with smooth transition between electric and hydraulic deceleration. Up to 0.3 g, the Audi e-tron prototype recuperates energy solely via the electric motors, without using the conventional brake – that covers over 90 percent of all decelerations. As a result, energy is fed back to the battery in practically all normal braking maneuvers.
