Germany: 2018 BMW M5 revealed

Mod Note: Our BMW M5 Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

BMW unveiled the new M5 featuring an all-wheel-drive system at the gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Electronics Arts and BMW Group debuted the new M5 in the video game Need for Speed Payback. The car can be ordered from September 2017 with a starting price of 117,900 Euros and deliveries will commence by the end of first quarter of 2018. The M5 first edition model limited to just 400 cars worldwide will also be available in an exclusive Frozen Dark Red metallic paint option at an added cost of 19,500 Euros.

The car has a reworked standard 5 series chassis with components unique to the M version. This includes the addition of an extra brace and aluminium struts at the rear to improve stiffness of the suspension linkages. The car has also grown is size and is the biggest of all the M5s ever made. It is 4,965 mm long, 1,903 mm wide and 1,473 mm tall, an increase of 55 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm respectively over the previous M5. Despite the increase in size, the engineers at BMW have managed to shave off about 25 kg to bring the kerb weight to 1,855 kg. Weight reducing measures include using an aluminum bonnet, a carbon-fibre roof, a boot mounted lithium ion battery and a lightweight exhaust system.

Powered by the familiar 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo engine from the previous M5, the new M5 uses reworked components like new turbochargers and intercoolers. The fuel injection pressure has been increased as well and the engine now produces 591 BHP @ 5,600 - 6,700 rpm and 750 Nm @ 1,800 - 5,600 rpm. This translates to an improvement of 40 BHP and 72 NM over the previous version. Power is sent to all wheels through an M xDrive four-wheel-drive system. The system enables the car to accelerate from a standstill to the ton in a claimed time of 3.4 seconds, an improvement of almost a second over the outgoing model. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h; however, the optional M Driver's Package increases it to 305 km/h.

The four-wheel-drive system, debuting for the first time on any M series car, features a central transfer case along with an active rear differential. This allows the power to be distributed between the front and rear axles as required. The M xDrive can be adjusted by the driver in 5 different modes based on the combination of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC off, M Dynamic mode, DSC on) modes and 3 M xDrive modes. With the DSC on, the car allows slight slip while accelerating out of corners. In M Dynamic mode, the car is still in 4WD mode, but allows controlled drifts. With the DSC off, the driver can choose from 3 modes for the M xDrive - 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD.

The driver can also choose 3 modes for the Variable Damper Control (VDC). Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus are the 3 engine modes. There are two buttons on the steering wheel (M1 and M2) which store the engine, transmission, suspension, M xDrive modes, DSC mode and head-up display settings as preferred. The driver can also use a button to adjust the engine sound as desired courtesy of the flap control system in the exhaust.

The standard M compound brakes feature blue painted six piston fixed calipers at the front and single piston floating calipers at the rear. All the four discs are perforated and inner vented. The optional carbon ceramic brakes have gold coloured calipers and further lower the kerb weight by 23 kgs. The car comes with 19-inch rims as standard with a staggered tyre setup of 275/40 R19 at the front and 285/40 R19 at the rear. Optional 20-inch wheels are also available. Other standard features include Merino leather and M seats with electric adjustment.

Re: Germany: 2018 BMW M5 revealed

A new M5 has arrived!
However, I am slightly disappointed.

- The power increment it offers over it's previous generation is actually nothing. (the previous gen M5 with competition package developed the same amount of Horse power).

- It's chief competitor, the E63 S, develops 610PS from a small engine. Given that BMW is using a V8 with 400cc extra cubic capacity compared to the E63, I was expecting a minimum of 50-60 more horses. (660HP would have been ideal)

- It's distant & indirect competitor, the Tesla Model S, is cheaper and boasts of 700+ HP.

BMW Ms official power figures are very conservative. Somebody dynoed the last m5 and it was making north of 600bhp. This ones probably 630-640.

I dont think anyone with an ounce of petrol in his vein would buy a tesla over an M5.

Exactly, But when we are presented with hundreds of videos where M5, RS7/6 etc are bashed by the Tesla, the same ounce of petrol in the vein starts boiling.

A lot of people (me included) hoped that the new M or RS7/6 would come up with crazy horse power and smash the electric brigade. But, looks like BMW are happy with same 5-10% engine gains.

Power, in the conventional Engines sphere, is suddenly looking saturated.
Where it is raining Horse powers in the electric scene.

I think you are nitpicking. Even the previous M5 at 560bhp was powerful enough, in fact it just couldn't put down its power. With a tune, downpipes etc cars were easily crossing 700bhp.

This new M5 uses the same engine, and as someone else mentioned its probably underrated. I'm sure they'll come out with a competition pack on this with 650bhp or so.

Also its not just about 0-100 times or the quarter or half mile. Agreed the Tesla beats most of these cars in the 0-100 sprint and the quarter mile. Where the Tesla loses out is acceleration above 200, which is where the M5 and RS7 and E63 will obliterate it.

Leaving that apart, its all about the ///M feeling, and the driver involvement, and the fun you have driving. The AMGs don't match, the RSs are not close and the Tesla sure as hell isn't involving to drive.

Re: Germany: 2018 BMW M5 revealed

Damn. Those 2 red buttons next to the paddle shifters are devilish. Press them and the car will become the devil incarnate.

That's the thing about the M5. You're going on the road..people will mistake you for 5 series and probably not even give a second look. But press that damn red button and everything changes. The drama, the exhilaration..; acceleration, torque, power are just figures on paper. Sure, Tesla is a mental car in itself but there's no drama once the initial acceleration is over.

Infact I'd say this : Comparing the M5 to Tesla is an insult to the M5 heritage. No offence and no need to spark a debate over this statement. Would be better if we stick to the M5.

The M5 now has not one but two Guinness World Records - One for the longest 8 hour drift (232.5 miles) and one for mid-drift refuelling from another car.

How the refueling was done:

What an amazing machine. I never thought I would like a car that's not White or Black. I just love it in Blue.

Dyno test shows the 2018 BMW M5 Is Way More Powerful Than Advertised. An independent test shows BMW's super sedan might be flirting with 700 horsepower. Read more here

Re: Germany: 2018 BMW M5 revealed

BMW accidently reveals details of M5 competition pacakage on their website before launch.

The most powerful iteration of the BMW M5 will get a spruced up engine with the Competition package and a stiffer suspension to give it an additional grip needed for more potency on the road.

Talking of power, the M5 Competition will now churn out extra 25 bhp and 50NM of torque from the same bi-turbo 4.4-litre V8, making a total power output of 625 bhp and a massive 800Nm of peak torque. This means, that the M5 Competition is more powerful, 22 bhp more powerful to be precise than its rival, the Mercedes-AMG E63S 4Matic+. The spruced up engine will also be quicker in terms of its ability to reach from 0-100kmph and can now achieve the same in just 3.3 seconds. Compared to its rival, the AMG E63S 4Matic+ does the same feat in 3.4 seconds. The top speed is not revealed, but reports suggest that it can touch 305kmph, 5kmph more than the AMG E63S.

Visually, the M5 Competition Package will feature a sports exhaust system, bespoke alloy wheels along with the black accents for the badges, front and rear grille and the rear bumper as well. The doors get the Competition-branded illuminated sills and M carbon-fibre engine cover with Competition letter at the back, similar to the one from the M2 Competition package.

Reports suggest that BMW will take the wraps off the BMW M5 Competition on May 8 with the production to commence from July, while the deliveries will start from December.

MANHART MH5 700

Germany: 2018 BMW M5 revealed-images.jpeg

Germany: 2018 BMW M5 revealed-images-2.jpeg

Manhart MH5 700 is a boosted version of BMW F90 M5 by the German company Manhart Performance.

The 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 now makes 713 BHP and 870 Nm of torque, which is substantially more than the standard car’s 592 BHP and 750 Nm.

The company says it takes just 5.9 seconds to accelerate from 100 to 200 km/h, but didn’t reveal the 0-100 km/h time – the stock car does it in 3.4 seconds.

The car has a full stainless steel exhaust system to ensure cold starts are louder and the turbos are heard more clearly. Other visual enhancements include a carbon-fibre package that includes a front spoiler with optional side blades, a new one-piece diffuser and boot lid lip spoiler.

Almost every year there is a performance company that tunes the BMW M5 to 700 hp or slightly more, used to be a thing 3-4 years ago but with electric cars coming in I guess anything a fuel-oriented car tries in terms of torque and power would seem futile really.

One buys a BMW for the feeling that only a BMW can give.. the 50/50 balanced chassis, the steering feel and natural engine noise. My favorite driving fantasy always will be the E60 (Bangle design) NA V10 engined M5 with the SMG box, every model since has been a mere gimmick. With petrol, NA is IT and if it did have a short throw stick shift I'd give it the ultimate driving machine tag of all time. As far as driving fun goes, in my view no automatic cuts it.

Its gonna be a long wait till eternity till my next imaginary dream car comes I guess.
