Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

According to the a Japanese report Toyota is all set to launch long-range EV in 2022 with a cutting edge technology.

The technology in use will Ultrafast-Charging Solid-State EV Batteries with twice the range of today’s EV's. Solid electrolyte could make electric cars lighter, battery smaller.

Toyota's new electric car, to be built on an all-new platform, will use all-solid-state batteries, allowing it to be recharged in just a few minutes.

By contrast, current electric vehicles (EVs), which use lithium-ion batteries, need 20-30 minutes to recharge even with fast chargers and typically have a range of just 300-400 kilometers (185-250 miles)

Quote:
So-called “solid state” batteries have both solid electrodes and solid electrolytes. Solid-state batteries can be made smaller and lighter than the lithium-ion batteries that currently power electric vehicles, but engineering such a battery at an attractive price point for mass production has been a challenge
With Solid state batteries Toyota will solve two major issues in the current Lithium- ion batteries - range and recharge time.
Higher powered lithium-ion batteries can get sometimes way too hot, or the occasional electric vehicle fire can attest.

In past Toyota was reluctant in pursing the EV path, but with now it seems they are serious enough and will challenge Tesla, thanks to the Chinese govt. policy mandating EV's in the future(2019).

The EV will debut in Japan in 2022 in a car built on a all new platform.

Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

Toyota intends to be the first company to bring out the next generation of battery technology in the mass market electric car segment.

The Japanese carmaker is currently working out the unsolved issues to make the battery mass production ready. The new battery is expected to power vehicles that will run more than 2 lakh km. Toyota chairman, Takeshi Uchiyamada said that it is not yet clear how long an electric battery must last, but he did comment that 3 years is a too short of a lifespan for the same.

The next-gen batteries will be solid-state devices. They are claimed to offer higher capacity and are safer than the current lithium-ion batteries. The solid-state battery replaces the liquid or gel electrolyte of the lithium-ion with a solid material. It is also expected to offer a significantly better storage capacity. These batteries also eliminate the need for close layering and use of electric conductors in individual cells. This in turn will reduce the size as well as cost while improving the packing efficiency of the batteries in the car.

The higher capacity battery will help the next crop of electric vehicles in two ways - improve the vehicle range and reduce the use of lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel or aluminium. Uchiyamada also said that while other companies are going all-electric, Toyota thinks that in the near future, both hydrogen cell and electric cars can co-exist and be a good alternate to the conventionally powered cars.

Re: Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

Looks like Toyota is feeling the heat of the current EV favoring political environment.

But again, I do believe if any company has to meaningfully affect the popularity of EVs, it has to be Toyota. Also kudos to them for their resilience in pursuing fuel cell technology.

(Reminds me of Toyota's preference for hybrids over diesels in the 2000s, and we know what happened in the end )

Re: Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

2025 ? Its too far away and hopefully they will continue with EV cars with whatever superior current battery technology we have today. I think if they are able to solve the mass production part of the equation, it will really create a upsurge in acceptability for consumers. Someone who can create such a big impact in batteries will surely get a huge head start in market. I still hope the technology however will be available to all manufacturers at fair use price (like FRAND in IT)

I hope people are still working on fuel cell related technologies (specifically the hydrogen source) since it solves the storage part of the energy.

Re: Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

Toyota has the muscle to stay invested in new technologies until they bring in the expected results for the company. A successful near 100 year stint in the auto sector and being the largest auto manufacturer (close competition with VW which is in deep trouble these days) has changed their "work DNA" and the company is always on its toes for taking the first mover advantage.
The kind of political inclination shown by countries during the Paris decision of 2015 has made it clear that fossil fuel usage has to come down and alternate technologies will bring in the next wave of development.
Toyota has always played the song of "long term reliability" and that can only happen when they are able to do a breakthrough in alternate technologies. The advantage of EVs is yet not certain against "fuel cells" and thus staying invested in both technologies is a good decision (provided money is not an issue) !

Kudos to Toyota; lets hope they open the "window to the future" for us !

Re: Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

Thing is, no one knows what to bet on - EVs, hydrogen fuel-cell cars or something else. No one knows what the car buyer of tomorrow will pick. That's why Toyota is saying:
Quote:
both hydrogen cell and electric cars can co-exist and be a good alternate to the conventionally powered cars.
Basically, because of its sheer size, Toyota can bet on both. They fell behind in EVs (by focusing too much on fuel-cell), but are now fast catching up.

Whichever manufacturer figures out the 'fuel of tomorrow' is going to be lucky. It could make a big guy bigger, or catapult a small brand into the front seat.

Re: Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

Toyota hybrids to adopt solid-state battery tech by 2025.

Quote:
The breakthrough technology could shorten charge times, increase range, and improve durability in electric cars.
Unlike contemporary lithium-ion packs, solid-state batteries do not use liquid electrodes or electrolytes.

Toyota:
Quote:
Our particular use for them in the beginning – it’s a little bit unintuitive – we’re going to start by using them in hybrid vehicles, and the reason for that is, firstly, the battery pack is smaller so it’s less sensitive to cost, and second, the amount of cycling that goes on in a hybrid vehicle for the battery is actually a tougher test.
Quote:
One of the great hopes for solid-state batteries is – alongside greater energy density, long lifetimes, and lower cost – also a potential to charge them much faster.
Quote:
We want to start by putting them in vehicles where we believe they are both the most well-suited in terms of lifetime, and also that will exercise them sufficiently so that as cost continues to come down we can roll them out in the future in fully-electric vehicles

Re: Toyota might come out with game-changing EV battery

After 4.5 years, Toyota tells us to wait for 3-4 years before using the cutting edge battery technology in a hybrid, may be we have to wait until 2030 for this battery to be used on a long range EV.
