Rumour: Ferrari 488 Speciale to debut in March 2018

According to documents filed at the California Air Resources Board (CARB), Ferrari is likely to introduce a limited edition 'Speciale' variant of the mid-engined 488 GTB sports car. The car is expected to get lighter components as well as a retuned engine.

The Ferrari 488 Speciale is expected to be powered by the same 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that does duty in the regular 488, but with increased power and torque outputs. In the standard car, the engine makes 661 BHP and 760 Nm of torque. The same 7-speed dual clutch transmission from the 488 is expected to be used. However, it could get reworked internals to handle the increase in power.

Camouflaged test mules of the limited edition Ferrari 488 had been spotted on a race track last month. The photos reveal that the car gets revised front and rear bumpers, reworked air intakes on the sides and what looks like an air vent on the bonnet. The spy images also reveal that the car gets identical headlights to the regular Ferrari 488.

According to the CARB documents, the Speciale is listed as '488 Special Series Coupe'. It must be noted that Ferrari has used the special series identification for cars like the LaFerrari and the 458 Speciale. This suggests that the unveiling of the car is nearing and Ferrari could showcase the model at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Rumored to offer at least 700hp, the new hardcore mid-engined Ferrari will be powered by an evolution of the V8 found in the 488 Challenge race car. The engine is reportedly going to be 10 percent lighter than the 488 GTB’s stock twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8.

The same report goes on saying that the significantly revised bodywork will be 20 percent more aerodynamically efficient and feature the biggest amount of carbon fiber Ferrari has ever put in a normal, series-production model.

Leaked images of Ferrari's soon-to-land track-focused 488 variant appear to show that it will be named the Pista - which is Italian for track.

Ferrari 488 Pista is finally here to steer away from buying a Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Ferrari 488 Pista Officially Revealed With More Power, Less Weight! It runs to 62 mph (100 kph) in just 2.85 seconds.

Quote:
the new Pista (Italian for “track”) was sent to Maranello’s gym and managed to shave off a whopping 90 kilograms (198 pounds). It now has a dry weight of only 1,280 kg (2,822 lbs), provided the car is fitted with all the available optional lightweight goodies.
Quote:
it then started to bulk up by adding 50 horsepower for a grand total of 711 hp (530 kW), representing “the largest ever increase in engine power for a special series car,” according to the company. The most powerful V8 engine in Ferrari history, the biturbo 3.9-liter has also gained 10 Newton-meters (7 pound-feet) of torque over the GTB and it now offers a mountain-moving 770 Nm (568 lb-ft).

Re: Ferrari 488 Speciale Revealed

Everytime I hear the name "Pista", all I am reminded of is

Ferrari 488 Speciale Revealed-pistasalted.jpg

and it seems that Google agrees with me since this is the first result when you search the word "pista". I wish Ferrari would choose better names than "Ferrari LaFerrari", "812 Superfast" and "488 Pista". Whatever happened to the simple but sophisticated "Spéciale"?

The term "Pista" means "Track", which translates to 488 being a track weapon.
Yes I agree the naming structure of Ferrari has started to be weird, La Ferrari then the 812 Superfast then this. I really liked the code name which was kept for La Ferrari, it was F-150.
