Ferrari to launch electric supercar before Tesla!

Speaking at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne said that Ferrari will build world's first electric super car, before Tesla Roadster hits the road in 2020.

He also gave the plans of introducing Ferrari's first SUV, which will be "the fastest on the market" by late 2019 or 2020.

Ferrari to introduce an electric supercar soon

Recent media reports suggest that Ferrari plans on making a battery powered electric supercar before other manufacturers like Tesla.

At the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, Ferrari Chairman and CEO, Sergio Marchionne said that the Italian company will be the first to make a production ready electric supercar. In the past, Ferrari had stated that they would never consider making electric cars. Ferrari has made mild hybrid cars like the LaFerrari and the FXX K using the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) found in their Formula 1 cars. In these cars, the KERS provides additional bursts of power unlike conventional hybrids where the goal is to save fuel.

The CEO also said that the Ferrari SUV would go on sale by 2019 or 2020 and that it will be the fastest in its class. Ferrari had earlier denied entering the SUV segment as well. But the company now considers the SUV segment too big and attractive to ignore. Even the rival carmaker, Lamborghini recently launched their first SUV globally. Ferrari will also be increasing the annual production at its Maranello plant on the back of the future SUV sales and growth driven from the Asian markets.
