New Mercedes-AMG G 63 unveiled

The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 has been unveiled before its launch at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6, 2018. The car will go on sale from March 18, while deliveries are expected to start by June 2018.

After showcasing the next-gen G-Class at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz has now shared details of the 2019 G 63 AMG. In the AMG guise, the G-Wagen gets a grille with vertical slats similar to other AMG cars, 21 or 22-inch alloy wheels, a redesigned bumper, flared wheel arches, red brake callipers and V8-biturbo badges on the fenders. Customers can further choose two optional packages - AMG Night package and Edition 1. While the former adds smoked headlamps, tail lights, turn-indicators and rear glass along with blackened ORVMs, bumpers, spare wheel cover with a chrome insert and alloy wheels, the latter gets the Designo Night Black Magno paint with graphite grey stripes along with red stripes on the ORVMs.

The interiors feature leather, carbon-fibre, and metal trim pieces. Optional equipment includes two 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard - one showing the instrument cluster and one for the infotainment system. Edition 1 cars will be equipped with red contrast stitching on the dashboard, seats, centre console and doorpads. The front seats sport black and red leather upholstery with a diamond-stitch pattern.

Powering the G 63 is a 4.0-litre, twin turbo, V8 petrol engine. The engine puts out 577 BHP and 850 Nm of torque @ 2,500-3,500 rpm. Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 220 km/h. With the AMG Driver's package the top speed is increased to 240 km/h. The engine also gets cylinder deactivation system that shuts off up to 4 cylinders between 1,000-3,250 rpm. The engine is mated to a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The transmission also gets a manual mode.

The G 63 is also equipped with a four-wheel drive and a revised transfer case. The car also gets lockable front, centre and rear differentials. The SUV gets a 5-link suspension at the rear and an independent, double wishbone unit at the front. Mercedes has also provided a variable rack steering wheel with Comfort and Sport modes. The car gets 8 drive modes - 5 on-road modes including Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual along with 3 off-road modes including Sand, Trail and Rock.

This is the last thing I wanted to see on Team BHP after I saw it in other forums. Ugliest of them all. How did this even manage to pass the "How it looks test" by Merc's/AMG's designers.

+1

I think the vertical slots in the grille does not suit the car at all. Blackening the vertical elements in the grille should bring a big improvement in the looks.

They probably got the design approved by Saudi princes and billionaires when they were stuck at the Ritz Carlton prison.

This makes the outgoing model look like the meaner older brother. While the interior is great, it's lost the rugged charm, and that face is just disappointing.

They have spoiled only the G 63.

The regular one looks brilliant! And I love it given its all new inside out.

I agree, its the 'Panamericana Grille' and the weird slanting edges of the headlight surrounds on the AMG that give it the goofy face. Granted I didn't like the regular one either, but the AMG makes the regular one look more rugged!

Re: New Mercedes-AMG G 63 unveiled

Have driven the current version of the AMG G63. With 577 horses the top speed is restricted to 240 kmph and that is for very good reason.

Have you ever tried going fast in a Mahindra jeep? This gives you the same feel albeit a bit more engineering has gone into it. It feels loose, the steering gives you the feel of ball joint assembly of jeeps, the seating position is exactly as in a Tempo Trax.

It's clear that the word ergonomics doesn't exist anywhere in the dictionary of its designer.

Essentially the worst handling AMG of all. It is a BOSS wagon meant to be driven around slowly with that wonderful low bass exhaust rumble spewing forth as you cruise S L O W L Y. And it does that well.

The minute you floor the accelerator, all the looseness of a jeep hits you right in the face!!

Forget 240 kmph, it would scare you to even go 100 kmph on most roads!!

Go faster and this is one machine that could land you in trouble faster than its claimed 0-100 kmph timing!!

Well, here is a primitive attempt to get rid of that grille:

The New Mercedes G-Class Is Basically a 4x4 Fortress

The newly redesigned Mercedes G-Wagen, the expensive body-on-frame off-roader that for the first time ever has independent front suspension, was crashed tested by the European New Car Assessment Program, and the results are exemplary. Just watch as this boxy fortress shrugs off barriers and avoids pedestrians with ease.

“Mercedes-Benz’s rugged G-Class also comes in with a five-star rating with an impressive performance in each of the four areas of assessment,” Euro NCAP says in its press release, lauding the G-Class’ safety assist systems, as well as its ability to protect adult occupants, child occupants, and pedestrians.

the gist of it is that the vehicle scored 90 percent, 83 percent, and 78 percent in the areas of adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and “vulnerable road user” protection, respectively. The Magna Steyr-built poshmobile did especially well in side impact testing, managing 16 out of 16 points for adult occupant protection and managing the full 8 points for child protection.

The G-Wagen also managed a 72 percent in the “safety assist” category, thanks to a good Automatic Emergency Braking system, as well as features like a seat belt reminder and speed limit assist, though apparently the lane keeping system isn’t great.

The new G-Wagen has been receiving rapturous driving impressions from journalists, and now it has scored top safety marks. Plus it looks good. It took Mercedes decades to finally do a major G-Class redesign, but it appears to be paying off.
