USA: Mahindra Roxor to debut on March 2, 2018 EDIT : Now Launched

Mahindra has released a teaser video which confirms that the Roxor will debut on March 2, 2018.

USA: Mahindra Roxor to debut on March 2, 2018 EDIT : Now Launched-roxor.jpg

In November 2017, Mahindra had announced that the Roxor would be the first model to be built at its new manufacturing plant in Detroit. The company has invested US$ 230 million in the Detroit facility which has an installed capacity of 10,000 units.

The Roxor is an off-road vehicle which has been designed and developed by Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA). The carmaker hasn't released any details about the new product, however the teaser video suggests that the Roxor is likely to be a utility vehicle (UTV) with two front seats, rollover protection and a loading bay at the rear. It is expected to get leaf spring suspension and off-road tyres.

The Mahindra Roxor will only be sold in the American market.

These screen shots gives an idea what is coming; definitely not the Thar as it is here, but a rough and crude off-roader on ladder-frame chassis on leaf suspension.

This is a Thar DI without the roll-over hoop and the windshield.

If we exclude some pickup trucks that use leaf springs, Nissan Xterra is an SUV that use leaf springs at the rear and this vehicle is out of production now. This is a favorite vehicle for offroaders. Some Jeep wrangler models also use Leaf springs, though I am not sure if its factory fitted or ex showroom modification. Other than Jeep, I am not aware of any SUVs currently in production that use leaf springs.

Based on what I've read on American forums, there is a good market for a cheap utility vehicle for work (4x4, pickup, cargo capacity). Low pricing is key, as everyone else has gone upstream with bigger + more expensive UVs.

Mahindra is already selling tractors in the USA and this new UV of theirs might be targeted at the same customers.

I don't think it'll be road legal as meeting emission & safety norms will cost big bucks. The UV might be restricted to farmland use only.

It is said to be borrowing Ssangyong Tivoli's engine which complies to Euro VI norms. Safety norms are still questionable though.

More on the ROXOR!

Quote:
The Indian automaker calls it Roxor, its entry into the growing off-road utility sector that sells roughly 500,000 units a year

Quote:
Roxor is the first answer in the United States. Hunters and farmers, off-roaders and groundskeepers and more soon will be able to select from 900 colors, each applied to the 148-inch long bodies in a million-dollar manual paint shop inside the Auburn Hills assembly operation.
Quote:
Instead of selling Roxor from Mahindra’s established network of tractor dealers across the country, the automaker is recruiting powersports dealers. More than 230 of 300 dealers targeted by Mahindra have signed to sell Roxors with a base price of $15,549, the company says. That price could nearly double when loaded with options.
Quote:
The options may not be endless for the 2.5-liter, 62-horsepower turbo-diesel mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, but they are expected to be substantial. Colors and seats, ride heights and hard tops, safari seats and back seats, winches and side enclosures — all of it, and more

Quote:
Roxor interiors will be black until Mahindra offers customizable options within six months.

Besides paint colors expected to soon be available, Mahindra will offer buyers partial and complete “wraps” including camo.

I was eager to see what are they going to do with the front grill. That new grill looks like my sheet metal practical assignments from school days.

As a Thar owner, I was getting jealous that Mahindra was going to provide something really sexy and advanced for the Americans.
Now I can relax, this appears cruder and uglier than our Indian Thar.
At $15-$30K its not cheap either.

re: USA: Mahindra Roxor to debut on March 2, 2018 EDIT : Now Launched

Roxor is meant to be UTV and not a SUV in the US. It need not be road-legal. No registration. But UTVs like polaris are usually very light (I think) and petrol-powered. Maybe this is will target the void created by pickups like ford ranger (strictly for farms) for people who want more than a polaris on their ranches but dont need a F150-size pickup. 4x4 will be seen as cheap fun. Just put it on a trailer behind a Toyota Tundra or f150 and take it to offroading trails like Moab .

re: USA: Mahindra Roxor to debut on March 2, 2018 EDIT : Now Launched

My local motorcycle dealer has already started pushing this. Expected to be priced competitively. Finally Mahindra gets into the US market off road at least if not on road. The OHV market has steady CAGR and is more attractive even for motorcycle makers.

Roxor is not street legal. A new street legal Jeep Wrangler XT is $25k. It would be competitive if it was less than $10k.
Also why did they skew the front grille. The straight/flat grill looks much more nicer!
