According to a media report, the next generation Mercedes S-Class will be developed on two separate platforms. One of them will get only plug-in hybrid powertrains, while the other will be an all-electric EQ S model, which will come under the company's electric vehicle sub-brand.

As the E-Class has grown in size, the next-gen S-Class could be offered only in the long-wheelbase option and is expected to be around 5,280 mm length. It might come with triple-beam LED headlights, a new grille and retracting door handles. Thanks to the lack of an engine upfront, the EQ S might have a shorter bonnet.

The regular S-Class is expected to use the MRA platform and get hybrid powertrains using the latest 3.0-litre petrol and 2.9-litre diesel six-cylinder engines. An AMG derived 4.0-litre V8 petrol is also expected to be offered. All the three engines are expected to be paired with a disc-shaped electric motor housed inside the gearbox and a lithium-ion battery on the boot floor. The hybrid variants could be capable of up to 100 km of all-electric range.

The EQ S might come with dual motors at both ends powering all four wheels. The combined power output could be over 400 BHP / 700 Nm in the base model, while a planned AMG model will develop over 600 BHP. The EQ S will be based on the modular electric architecture (MEA) with a flat floor to house batteries. The all-electric vehicle is reported to have a range of more than 499 km.

The EQ S is part of the German carmaker's GBP 9 million plan to introduce more than 10 dedicated EVs in the UK market within the next 6 years.

They're going to need the hybrid in the regular range not just for 'image', but also to meet ever-tightening emission & CAFE norms. That's also why the Germans have resorted to idling start-stop systems (imagine that in a luxury car) and 8 - 10 speed gearboxes. I would any day prefer a proper hybrid instead; these make a lot of sense for India.

Now that's one huge screen. Loved the current gen S class interiors. Don't really like the idea of eliminating all the physical buttons.

The interior looks very 'slabby' with many flat panels. Using curved panels instead might add a lot of character to the interior.

2021 Mercedes S-Class could come with Level 3 Autonomous Tech

According to a media report, the next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class could be the first production car to get Level 3 autonomous driving technology.



The report suggests that the system is still under test and will have to go through homologation. It could allow drivers to take their eyes off the road while driving and only intervene when asked to by the car’s computer. It is said that Tesla's Autopilot system is classified as a Level 2 system but the company claims that it is capable of Level 5 autonomy. The Audi A8 is also said to come with Level 3 autonomy, but the feature has not been activated.

The next-gen S-Class is likely to come with petrol and diesel powertrains with hybrid options. An all-electric variant could also be launched. On the outside, the car could get headlights and taillights similar to that of the CLS. On the inside, it will get a Tesla-esque, portrait-style touchscreen system and a digital instrument panel.

From the not-so rich person's perspective, it is good that these technologies are coming to the high-end cars first.

For the first time ever, the rich are going to be beta-testing (and taking risks) for these technologies on behalf of the larger public before these technologies trickle down to the mass-market for adoption.

The rich are always the first beta testers of every product and technology. The first airbags were in the S class way back in the early 1990s, followed by lots more technologies like radar cruise control and voice calling.

The Epitome of Luxury lives on. First pictures of the 2021 Mercedes Benz S Class W223 break cover. The interiors look really hot with those plush seats and all technology around. But the exterior looks will surely take some time growing on you. Nevertheless will still be the best seller in it's segment.
