Re: 2019 next-gen Porsche 911 leaked

Finally a 911 that one can identify as the next-gen . The rear end looks wicked and will be even more so with a trademark wing.

No more n/a engines in the 911 - this series will have turbos on all variants.

That will be big bummer for purists around the world.

Many enthusiasts love Porsche's flat six NA motor to bits.

Narain is going to keep that GT3 till eternity now.

Me too, me too. With due respect to turbo's boost, there is nothing quite like high-revving a sweet naturally-aspirated petrol where power comes in linear. Give me a big n/a over a turbo anyday.

That's lovely to hear. I am also in the same boat, though I have never been inside a 911, let alone drive one. The only Porsche I have driven sips diesel. Then, that was the car which saved Porsche and lets them continue making 911 and all. So, can't complain.

But I totally get the emotional connect that a powerful NA petrol motor provides. One of my all time favorite motor is a NA V10. It was made by Yamaha and fitted to the brilliant Lexus LFA. And then there is that glorious sound track it makes. Formula 1 aside, I still don't think any car has come anywhere close to that. Yamaha put all their might of building high revving motorcycle engines and musical instruments behind that engine and it clearly shows. What an engine!!

Back to the new 911 and I am still surprised to hear about having turbos across the range. I really thought Porsche found their true niche in the recent past and was giving back to the real enthusiasts who wanted to engage with their cars rather than going after numbers. The 911 R, the manual GT3, the new Carrera T with no infotainment system was all pointing to that direction. So, there was every reason to expect the 992 to be something special. Something for the real drivers who just want to be alone with their car on a nice road and not care about resale or play top trumps at a pub.

Watch the brilliant Henry Catchpole with the Carrera T here and you will know what I am talking about.

Re: 2019 next-gen Porsche 911 leaked

Guys, hold your horses, the next gen 911 might not be turbocharged after all!

Quote:
In an interview with Australia’s Drive website, Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche’s head of motorsport, said that the original Automobile report wasn’t true. The plot thickens.

He denied the claim that the engine would be turbocharged. It doesn’t mean it won’t be, of course, but even if it is, Porsche doesn’t want us to know about it yet. A separate report in Road & Track said that the 911 will move to the chassis used by the R8, but Dr Walliser denied that, too. It seems unlikely – that platform puts the engine in the middle, after all, and squeezing rear seats in would be less likely than Kermit the Frog entering this year’s Le Mans.

The good doctor is quoted as saying that he’d “like to continue with [the naturally-aspirated flat-six] as long as we can do it.” He’s clearly a fan of boost, having led the engineering development for the latest GT2 and the 918 Spyder, but he understands the unique appeal of the GT3 – especially as a manual.

The normal line-up is already turbocharged in the latest 991.2 facelift so there is no ambiguity there. But yes, Porsche is considering leaving an NA motor in the GT3 variant since Porsche has finally decided that the GT3 is for people who enjoy driving itself not laptimes. They've got the GT3RS and GT2RS for laptimes.

First-Time Look Inside All-New 2019 Porsche 911 (992)

Quote:
the touchscreen infotainment display is far from being as large as the Panamera’s 12.3-inch one, and the center console has a lot more physical buttons and switches than you’d find on the 911’s four-door sibling.
Quote:
for the first time ever, the central air vents have been positioned underneath the infotainment system, unlike with the 991, 997, 996, 993, 964, or even the 930. As for the steering wheel itself, it appears to be the exact same design as the one on the 2019 Panamera.

Re: 2019 next-gen Porsche 911 leaked

Another spy shot rumoured to be of the next gen. GT3 featuring a deployable spoiler and a rear bumper with a different exhaust outlet setup that's seen in the GT lineup.
Would the next gen. GT3 have this instead of the fixed wing?

Re: 2019 next-gen Porsche 911 leaked

EDIT: Now launched just ahead of the LA motor show.

https://www.motor1.com/news/279465/n...che-911-debut/

Moving past all the "same but different" jokes, the front bears a strong resemblance to the iconic 964 and 993, while the rear will take some getting used to. It will sell though, a lot ! Cabin is a massive step up, but the digitalisation of the dials may not please everyone.

Basically, here's the formula for being a 911 fan:

1. Criticise the crap out of every new model launched, moaning about the loss of air cooled motors, suspension rates, hydraulic steerings, naturally aspirated motors as the case may be

2. Eventually realise there are redeeming qualities.

3. Start coveting it, and a new model launches precipitating step 1.

4. Due to the wistful look at the past catalogue no matter what the model, residual values remain dignified depending on the model at hand.

That said, night vision and lane keep assist & potential for a hybrid in a "sports car", guess they are appealing to everyone
