Porsche has reportedly ceased production of vehicles equipped with diesel engines.

Autocar reports the decision was made after the company decided against offering a new Cayenne Diesel. As a result, the automaker has reportedly phased out the Macan S Diesel and the Panamera 4S Diesel.

While there’s little doubt the dieselgate scandal played a role in the decision, a Porsche spokesperson said the move mirrors the “cultural shift” to more eco-friendly vehicles such as the Panamera plug-in hybrid and the upcoming Mission E.

That V6 is a brilliant engine, but it looks like time for diesel engines are up already.

Cayenne Diesel might continue for some time, but not for long.

This week, Germany’s top court will decide whether it is legal for pre-Euro 6 diesel vehicles to be banned by city councils. Both Stuttgart (of all places) and Leipzig want to stop older diesel vehicles entering the city limits. If the court gives the policy the green light, the repercussions could be huge.

Cayenne Diesel might continue for some time, but not for long.

I believe, on the new Cayenne that's not an option or at least not for Indian market when they plan to launch here in next Quarter.

15% of diesel sales is a minority, but 15% is still a big number in an industry where growth is usually in the single digits. Might not affect Porsche in markets like the USA & China, but it will definitely take a setback in diesel-driven countries (including parts of Europe). We can safely assume that the Cayenne in India is finished as Indians hate big, petrol SUVs. Of course, that could change with electric / hybrid options, but it's a long way off.

Will help PR no doubt as Porsche will be able to distance itself from all the diesel controversies.

They plan to launch Turbo editions in the beginning which should be 1,5 Cr + and regular 6 cylinders later on but the expected prices are more like 1,35 Cr +

People will buy this only for exclusivity, I don't see a reason otherwise.

Porsche India's cash cow (pun intended) is the Cayenne diesel. A huge chunk of their sales come from diesel Cayennes.

The Panamera being a long and low sedan hasn't done as well, and the Macan is almost as expensive as the Cayenne itself, making it a low-seller.

Porsche is going to take a huge hit in terms of numbers, with the death of the diesel Cayenne. Additionally, Government policies aren't exactly 'hybrid friendly'.

This is going to hit Porsche India where it hurts!

According to a media report, Porsche has ended the production of its diesel-powered cars. The move is a result of increasingly stricter emission norms and change in customer preferences.

The first Porsche with a diesel engine (3.0L V6) was the Cayenne, which was launched back in 2009. The third generation of the Cayenne which was launched in August last year is offered only with petrol and hybrid powertrains, including a plug-in version. It is also reported that diesel vehicles contribute just 15% of the total sales of Porsche cars whereas some of the rivals like BMW have the same number at 30%.

Porsche has announced that they won't be updating the Macan to meet the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) emission norms. Also, in case of the Panamera, the diesels contributed to just 15% of sales while the same stood at 35% for petrol and 50% for hybrids. These are the reasons why the company discontinued its Panamera 4S Diesel and Macan S Diesel models.

The diesel engines that Porsche uses have been borrowed from the Volkswagen group. The company will now be focusing of the Mission E electric car, which is expected in 2019.

The current wave of diesel cars getting R.I.P. really saddens me. Yes, I know that petrols are powerfull and diesel hasn’t been kind on environment but torque that diesel engines provide is simply unmatched! Once you get used to diesel torque its really hard to miss it. Also big petrols are guzzlers where as diesels are comparatively more economical.

As GTO said, next generation Cayenne will be a dead on arrival. India hates big petrol vehicles. German trio introduced petrol engine options on there flagships but cars are still lying in dealer inventory. Porsche has hybrid systems but our government isn’t kind to hybrid powertrains.
eg: camry hybrid lost its show due to sudden change in government policies.

Porsche has clarified that diesel options are on the way, apparently the press release was incorrectly understood. Porsche will focus on petrol and especially on hybrid that is much more popular. No diesel for the US market though.

Porsche is planning to re-launch Cayenne diesel, the timelines however are not clear at this moment. They have also acknowledged that Cayenne diesel continues to be a key offering in several markets (including India).

Porsche first German carmaker to abandon diesel engines

Sports car maker Porsche said Sunday it would become the first German auto giant to abandon the diesel engine, reacting to parent company Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal and resulting urban driving bans. "There won't be any Porsche diesels in the future," CEO Oliver Blume told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Instead, the company would concentrate on what he called its core strength, "powerful petrol, hybrid and, from 2019, purely electric vehicles".

The Porsche chief conceded the step was a result of the three-year-old "dieselgate" scandal at auto giant Volkswagen, the group to which the luxury sports car brand belongs.

Diesel car sales have dropped sharply as several German cities have banned them to bring down air pollution -- a trend that Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to discuss with car company chiefs in Berlin later Sunday.

Stuttgart-based Porsche in February stopped taking orders for diesel models, which it had sold for nearly a decade.

Blume said Porsche had "never developed and produced diesel engines", having used Audi motors, yet the image of the brand had suffered.

"The diesel crisis has caused us a lot of trouble," he said, months after Germany's Federal Transport Authority ordered the recall of nearly 60,000 Porsche SUVs in Europe.

Blume promised that the company would keep servicing diesel models on the road now.

The German government hopes to see one million fully electric and hybrid vehicles on the road by 2022, up from fewer than 100,000 at the start of this year.
