Toyota has released details of a new range of engines and transmissions for future models based on the brand's new TNGA platform, prior to revealing the cars themselves.

Next generation Toyotas to get 'world's most thermally efficient engine', innovative new CVT gearbox and aim to boost efficiency and performance.

1. 2.0-liter Dynamic Force Engine- Direct-injection, Inline 4-cylinder Gasoline Engine.

The new engine realizes equal or greater power performance while realizing best-in-class fuel economy accomplished through the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force Engine and with Direct Shift-CVT.

Dynamic Force Engine 2.0-liter developed as a core engine of Toyota.

2. A 2.0-liter Toyota Hybrid System (THS II)

The new 2.0-liter system implements technologies that allow for a smaller, lighter, and more energy efficient structure. A 2.5-liter system was previously introduced in the redesigned Camry.

Toyota claims world-leading thermal efficiency and increased torque across the rev range, while it will comply with future emissions legislation ahead of time.

3. Direct Shift-CVT: A New Type of Continuously Variable Transmission

With the new structure which adopts launch gears, significant improvement of transmission efficiency and a 15% increase in ratio spread are realized. It's said to be six per cent more efficient than before due to reduced mechanical losses

Shift speed is improved by 20% due to the narrow belt angle and miniaturization of the pulley; improvement of shift control contributes to the realization of direct response driving.

4. New 6-speed Manual Transmission (6MT)

Top-grade manual transmission that is lightweight and compact with implementation of a dedicated reverse gear synchronizer.

Manual transmission operation supported by electronic control, relieving driver burden.

Regarding TNGA-based powertrains, Toyota has already announced plans to introduce 17 versions of nine engines, 10 versions of four transmissions, and 10 versions of six hybrid systems by the end of 2021. The new continuously variable transmission, 6-speed manual transmission, 2.0-liter engine, and 2.0-liter hybrid system represent four of the planned components.

Roll-out of New Powertrain Units

By the end of 2023 Toyota aims to have TNGA-based powertrain units installed in approximately 80% or more of vehicles sold will feature new powertrain components, reducing CO2 emissions by 18% or more.

This is nice. A gear drive bypassing the CVT system to get moving from standstill will help eliminate belt slip and thus efficiency. Will be useful in heavy stop/go traffic condition and getting started on steep roads.

Talking about efficiency. The following quote from Autocar claims the efficiencies are industry leading.

Quote:

The new four-cylinder engine is said to have a thermal efficiency of 40% – just 1% short of what the Toyota Prius offers with its 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain.
Quote:

The new 2.0-litre petrol engine, which peaks at 169bhp, will also offered with hybrid electric power. In this guise, it will match the Prius’s 41% thermal efficiency but offers more performance thanks to its larger capacity.
While 169bhp from 2 litre seems very less compared to what the high strung turbocharged, supercharged Germans are now belting out. We could probably expect reliability over a billion miles from these new Toyota engines as well. We will wait to see how these new engines act out though. India might not see this engines for at least a decade i guess.
