Germany: VW to buy back cars if cities impose diesel bans

In February 2018, a German court ruled that cities in Germany could ban diesel vehicles. In response to this ruling, Volkswagen has said that it would buy back cars from customers if cities impose such a ban on diesel cars.

As a direct result of the recent developments, diesel car sales are on the decline. In February, sales in Germany plunged by 19%. In a bid to reassure customers, Volkswagen has said that it would offer incentives on new diesel car purchases. Besides, the carmaker would buy back cars sold between April 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. Buyback offers will available if the city where the buyer lived banned diesel vehicles within 3 years of the purchase. In this case, dealerships would buy back the cars at their current value if the owner purchases a new vehicle from them at the same time.

Skoda - a part of the Volkswagen Group has announced a similar buyback offer valid on cars purchased between April 1 2018 and the end of June 2018 and will cover bans introduced within 4 years from the date of purchase. Brands like Audi and BMW are offering buyback schemes on leased diesel vehicles only.

In 2017, European countries including England and France had announced that petrol and diesel car sales would be banned from 2040. Germany could also take a similar step in a bid to reduce emissions.
