Matthias Müller fired; VW appoints Herbert Diess as new CEO

Dr. Herbert Diess has been appointed as the Volkswagen Group's Chairman of the Board of Management. He replaces Matthias Muller who recently stepped down from the post. Diess will be responsible for Group development and research and will also take on additional Group management roles alongside heading the Vehicle IT.

As part of the reorganization, the Volkswagen Group has announced that Audi CEO Rupert Stadler will head Group Sales, while Porsche CEO has been appointed to the Group Board of Management and will oversee the Group production.

Gunnar Kilian who has served as Secretary-General of the Volkswagen Group Works Council until now has been appointed as the new member of the Group Board of Management for Human Resources. He replaces Dr. Karlheinz Blessing. Meanwhile, Dr. Franciso Javier Garcia Sanz who has been the head of Procurement and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the SEAT brand will be leaving the company. Frank Witter will head company IT.

Besides, Volkswagen plans to organize the group into 6 new business areas including a separate China region. Also, new brand groups - Volume, Premium and Super Premium, will be introduced.

Whether Diess can manage a behemoth like VW, only time will tell. He's also an outsider (was with BMW for 20 years). Muller was always going to be a stop-gap CEO - he knew it himself. Still, Muller did a very good job of recovering VW's sales after the emissions scandal.

That said - and the emissions cheating aside - IMHO Martin Winterkorn was the best CEO for Volkswagen. He's a brilliant bossman who took the company from strength to strength.

VW New Boss To Review All Group's Brands; Might Sell Some!
