Amongst the most legendary vehicles of our times without any doubt. The sheer numbers are mind-boggling. Also consider that the average selling price of F-Series trucks is anywhere between $35,000 - $40,000. To put the gross in perspective, it's like Maruti selling 6 lakh Altos in a month.

Thanks to a blistering first-half pace, Ford Motor Co. might sell more big pickups in the U.S. this year than it ever has, shattering a 14-year-old record set at the height of the housing boom.

The automaker sold more than 450,000 of its F-series line — one every 35 seconds — from January through June. That's 4.2 percent more than in the first half of 2004, when it set an annual record of 939,511.

There's good reason to believe it can keep up the pace: Fifty-two percent of F-series sales typically occur in the second half of a year, when the new model year arrives and languishing inventory gets marked down.

Based on the first-half gain, Ford would sell more than 941,000 of the trucks in 2018, setting a new high-water mark four years into the F-150's product cycle and in a declining market. It might achieve that milestone despite redesigned models from its chief competitors and a fire at a supplier plant that halted production for more than a week in May.

Well, not specific to Ford or F-Series but now that sub-prime auto loans are a significant chunk of the auto finance pie, the record numbers are not surprising at all. I just last week read a report that Americans are financing their cars/trucks at $800/month approx on average which is $100 more than just 2 years before. SUVs are the trend, gas is(was?) cheap, loans/leases are plentiful, nothing is stopping the US auto market for a while.

Absolutely love there trucks. The latest F150, 250, 350 and the Raptor are just superb. Unbelievably good interiors for what essentially are heavy duty trucks with massive towing abilities. They have high end versions called Platinum which can seriously give luxury cars a run for their money. And what massive engines. How I wish I could get my hands on an F350 or a 250! Have drooled over them whenever I have been to the US.

Sharing below a very amusing review of an F250 Platinum. Quite obvious the guy is all gaga over the truck although he gives a very practical rating in the end. I fell head over heels for this truck! Although he says F150 in the beginning, it is actually an F250 Platinum.

The F450 and 650 are too big for regular use.

Considering the fact that Ford recently discontinued all of it's cars, except for the Mustang, it's not very surprising that they would be betting high on their truck sales. What boggles me are the numbers. I've seen that most truck owners tend to keep their trucks for a really long time. Much longer than a regular passenger car. So how are they managing such numbers? AFAIK, the lion's share of the sales are from the US. I've heard that they tend to be a lot more reliable than other Ford products, which should in a way prevent existing owners going for replacement in the short term.

I've been inside an F-150 twice so far. The first instance was exactly two days after I got to US. A nice lady offered to drop all the furniture me and my room mates acquired at a church sale. The truck swallowed everything and still had room to spare. The second instance was when we rented a U-Haul for a couple of hours when we were shifting apartments. Got to drive the beast for a very short period. Considering the fact the largest car I had ever driven at the time was an Aria, the experience was a bit overwhelming, especially when I had to back up into a not so wide spot next to a Mercedes. And boy oh boy are they thirsty. Although I still see almost all variety of them on a daily basis, I'm still looking ahead for the day where I come across the mad 'Raptor' which can outrun Boxsters and Caymans.

Australia is one of the biggest pick up truck markets in the world. Ford should seriously consider making these in right hand drive for our market than importing them as left hand drive, ripping everything and do a local right hand drive conversion. By the time all is said and done, this thing costs so much that it looses all appeal.
