Japan: 16 of 18 Toyota plants to be shut after earthquake

According to a media report, Toyota will halt production in 16 out of 18 assembly plants on Monday after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Japan's Hokkaido island last Thursday. The earthquake has resulted in the shutdown of the carmaker's transmission facility in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.

All Toyota and Lexus models would be affected, including those exported overseas. However, Daihatsu plants making Toyota brand vehicles would be kept running. Affected export models include the Lexus ES sedan and the GX SUV, the Toyota Prius, 4Runner SUV and the C-HR crossover.

The earthquake has triggered landslides and disrupted power and transport in the region. Over 21 people have been reported dead and 13 missing. Power was restored to majority of the residents early Saturday. However, the government has asked local businesses and residents to reduce energy consumption.

Condolences to those who have lost lives.

Btw,
Japan has great diplomatic relations with India and it'd be in Toyota's interest to leverage that to set up plant(s) in India, and avail benefits that the govt will liberally extend.

A possible advantage for India could be not just employment but also developing trade ties as the world may witness huge competition between massive economies like China and US (apart from our local market being offered products with fewer features omitted).

Not much else I can make off of this news.

This country never seems to get any respite from natural calamities. Guess they can't.

It was only a week ago they were struck by a typhoon and now this.

The good thing is the Japanese people take a lot of pride in rebuilding what is lost and they do it fast. They swing back in action no matter what the calamity.

Well said @sandeepmohan. They are probably the most resilient and hardworking people on the planet with an incredible sense of community development and support.

Rightly like you mentioned, their pride and efficiency in rebuilding the nation is what keeps the country going despite frequent disasters and even their rebirth after the atomic bombs.

A great learning for other people too.
