A new automaker is entering the global market, and its from Vietnam; VinFast.

They will be debuting with one Suv and one Sedan, at the Paris Motor show on October 2nd 2018 and sales to commence by Sep 2019.
An unique nature of the product is that, the design was selected by public voting, from around 20 sketches from various design houses.
The winning design are by Italian company Pininfarina.

A bit of OT about VinFast:
VinFast stands for Vietnam – Style – Safety – Innovation – Pioneer, and aspires to be the brand for Vietnamese cars.
GM sold its Vietnam operations to VinFast earlier this year. Under the agreement, VinFast took ownership of GM’s Hanoi plant and has distribution rights of GM’s Chevrolet brand in Vietnam.

Interesting development this. Both the vehicles are based on BMW platforms and are likely to use BMW derived powertrains. So pricing isn't going to be very affordable. What remains to be seen is that, how a new unknown brand pulls this one off at the premium end of the spectrum even in its home market.

Re: VinFast - a new automaker from Vietnam - to launch in October 2018

While the actual originality of the model may be doubted (in terms of how its being built), it's getting good word of mouth & building public anticipation at this stage.

A lot of nationalist pride is influencing opinion, but it remains to see how much of this will translate to sales. Also, a lot of it will be influenced by other functional factors like how the vehicle performs on road etc.

But nevertheless, a good fight it seems in the domestic Vietnamese market.

VinFast introduces 3 new SUVs with up to Level 4 Autonomous Driving

VinFast, an electric carmaker from Vietnam introduces 3 new SUVs with up to Level 4 Autonomous Technology. Of these, two will be available in the US and Canada.

Quote:
Depending on the model, the electric cars can go 300-500 kilometers per full charge.

The premium versions of these cars have 14 cameras capable of detecting objects nearly 690 meters away, and the company claims its self-driving system is eight times faster than that of existing self-driving car models.

The cars can find their own parking spots and can be summoned by drivers when needed.

VinFast said the cars meet the highest safety standards in the world including a five-star rating of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a five-star rating of the European New Car Assessment Programme.

The standard version of the VF31 can be ordered in Vietnam starting this May and will be delivered in November.

For the VF32 and VF33 models, customers can order starting September and delivery will begin in February 2022.

The company will also sell these cars in the U.S., Canada and the E.U. with orders opening in November and delivery in June next year.

Carscoops.com provides more detailed information on these SUVs:

Quote:
VinFast has unveiled three new electric vehicles and announced plans to become a global automaker.

Carscoops.com on the VF31

Kicking things off is the VF31, which is a C-segment crossover that will be launched in Vietnam this November.

It’s not exactly a thing of beauty, but it has a distinctive front fascia and plastic body cladding. The model will measure 169.3 inches (4,300 mm) long and have a wheelbase that spans 102.8 inches (2,611 mm).

Inside, we can expect a heated steering wheel, heated / ventilated seats and a climate control system with a HEPA filter. Buyers will also find a “10-12.8 inch” infotainment system as well as driver assistance systems such as lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and a surround view camera.

On the performance front, the base model will have an electric motor that develops 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS) and 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) of torque. If that’s not enough, the Premium version has 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. Both will have a 42 kWh battery pack and this will deliver a range of up to 186 miles (300 km).

Carscoops.com on the VF32:

The VF32 is a larger D-segment crossover that will be launched locally in February of 2022. It’s then slated to arrive in European, U.S. and Canadian markets in June.

The company didn’t say much about the model, but we can see chrome trim and slender LED daytime running lights. In terms of size, the VF32 will measure 187 inches (4,750 mm) long and have a 116.1 inch (2,950 mm) wheelbase.

Inside, drivers will find a 15.4-inch infotainment system and a multi-color ambient lighting system. Other highlights include heated / ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel and a climate control system with a HEPA filter.

The entry-level model will have a single electric motor developing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. Moving up to the Premium variant will reward buyers with a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS) and 472 lb-ft (640 Nm). Both will apparently have a 90 kWh battery pack, but there’s no word on how far they’ll be able to travel.

Carscoops.com on the VF33

The VF33 will arrive at the same time as the VF32 and feature LED Matrix headlights, a panoramic glass roof and a 15.4-inch infotainment system. We can also see a ventilated hood, flush-mounted door handles and a distinctive C-pillar. This particular model will measure 201.6 inches (5,120 mm) long with a wheelbase spanning 124 inches (3,150 mm).

The VF33 is slated to have a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS). While the powertrain appears to carryover from the Premium version of the VF32, the VF33 will have a battery capacity of up to 106 kWh. This should enable the model to travel up to 342 miles (550 km) on a single charge.

The VF32 and FV33 are slated to have Level 2 and Level 3 semi-autonomous driving systems, while “full-option versions” of all three models will have “some Level 4 autopilot features.” These are said to include summon and automatic parking functions. To enable these features, the vehicles will be equipped with 14 cameras, 19 360° sensors and an undisclosed amount of LiDAR sensors.

Re: VinFast - a new automaker from Vietnam - to launch in October 2018

Is anyone getting French car vibes?
Peugeot? Citroen? kinda....

Wouldn't be surprised considering how their previous models were based on BMWs and others.
But atleast they were redesigned by Pininfarina to almost indistinguishable levels.

Not to take anything away from Vinfast. Pretty sure they are capable of designing and developing.
They have kinda taken over and hired most of Holden Australia's facilites and engineers respectively.

Wish Vinfast success. After the Koreans, the US market has become almost too hard to enter for others thanks to all the regulatory barriers.

Re: VinFast - a new automaker from Vietnam - to launch in October 2018

Vinfast rallies on after becoming world's third-most valuable automaker.

VinFast - a new automaker from Vietnam - to launch in October 2018-screenshot-20230829-093740.png

- The company made a blowout debut on Wall Street this month and has quickly grown in valuation to become the third-most valuable automaker - only behind Tesla and Toyota

- Vinfast is almost entirely controlled by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's richest man and founder of parent conglomerate Vingroup, with a stake of about 99.7%

- The firm is also entering the U.S. and European markets at a time when EV demand is slowing and Tesla has waged a price war to defend its dominance.

-Vinfast expects to sell as many as 50,000 electric vehicles this year, compared with Tesla's projection to deliver 1.8 million cars.

-To drive sales, Vinfast is breaking away from the direct-to-consumer approach used by Tesla and turning to dealers.

- But Vinfast's small amount of publicly available shares has made the stock prone to volatility, with shares jumping or slumping more than 14% in 11 of the past 12 sessions.
