High mileage cars (500,000 to 1 million miles)

Anyone and everyone who drives a Toyota / Lexus, would agree that the brand is the epitome of reliability.

While surfing the web, recently I came across this article on "high mileage Lexus" and I thought that this deserves an explicit thread here.

Link to the article

This gentleman in California had purchased a Lexus LS 400 in 1989 and has driven it for 5,50,000 "miles", before replacing it with another LS again. Call it brand loyalty. And, even after 550k miles, the car looks to be in immaculate condition.

Attached pic of the vehicle.

At almost 8.8 lac kms, the vehicle looks to be in such a pristine condition - Given Indian road and weather conditions, it makes me wonder how easy or how difficult it would be to preserve a car in such a condition after nearly 3 decades and almost a million kms under the hood.

It is a function of roads, traffic, weather and maintenance in addition to the Toyota quality.
I have sat in Toyota Crown & similar Toyota cars in Japan that are running well past 500k as taxis. I was surprised to see such old cars (95-98) vintage running so well there.

re: High mileage cars (500,000 to 1 million miles)

Stepped into a cab a few months ago in Bangalore. Toyota Etios Liva. Interior looked great, exterior was neat too. I assumed it couldn't have done more than 15-20k km. I glanced at the odo and it read 1.5L km! I was literally speechless for a while. My own experience with our family cars was that they began to age noticeably post 50k km. And here was a car, used as a cab no less, in Indian traffic conditions, that looked in better condition at 1.5L km than our family's Marutis and Hyundais did at 30k km!

Since Lexus is the luxury version of a Toyota, with reasonable assumption being that they would engineer one of those more carefully, and considering a Japanese version, taking in to account the level of perfection that society generally goes in for, I would not be surprised at the mileage numbers these cars can carry!

I can give an example in the Indian context. Sea Princess hotel in Juhu has been using a Lexus LS430 (Pics: Slammed Lexus LS430)for the past 15 years. The car is extremely well maintained and still looks brand new even today. I am not sure how many kms it has done - but the fact it is still under their ownership (and not rotting (Pics: Imports gathering dust in India)anywhere) - does mean that they are reliable even in the long run.

Problem in India is our roads. If they were decent and has less potholes, then cars would stay normal for a longer time.

I have seen Innova in the cab segment doing 10+ Lakh km, some of them were in pretty neat condition.

Well, it's a Toyota built to even higher standards than a regular Toyota, so what do you expect . I've seen many Innovas & Qualis' with over 5 lakh km on the odometer. In fact, I recently drove an Innova taxi with 3 lakh km on the clock and it felt like a 1 lakh km example - link to post.

The record for the 'highest mileage' Lexus belongs to this one. 1 million miles (16 lakh km ). Related link 1 and 2:

Can I question if this thread needs to be Lexus specific?

Here's a list of cars that are known to have crossed a million miles, and I see no real brand advantage in this game. Infact, for it's brand reputation - Toyota and Lexus cars are less in these lists, with only Volvo and Honda having a couple of entries more than others.

Re: High mileage cars (500,000 to 1 million miles)

Dubai Taxi operating a fleet of vehicles from Toyota, Nissan and Hyundai has around 5000 vehicles.

Toyota being their favorite vehicle supplier and Camry and Innova being the two top vehicles forms the bulk of the fleet.

These two toyota vehices are driven to 1000,000 kms in a span of 5 years and then de-fleeted and sold off in auctions.

My wife's J90 2002 Toyota Prado as done 490,000kms and expecting another 10,000kms to reach the half million kms target!

A Million Mile Toyota Tundra.
Source : https://www.autoblog.com/2016/05/16/...mile-official/

A Million Miles in Tundra, a pick up truck is amazing. It would definitely be used for some hard work or occasional abuse.

Operating conditions in India means we wont be having such records. Didn't few old Mercedes-Benz clocked similar mileage ?

EDIT : Here is the link for tear-down of the same.

There are some long ownerships in India, but it hasn't been combined with high miles in it. We aren't a drive heavy country. There is an Elantra ownership here with 400000 on the clock, but it is 2004 I think. On the other end, there are some M800 ownerships but not with high miles on it. My father owned a 1991 KB 4S bike, which was laid to rest in 2017 after an accident, but I don't think clocked more than 200000 kms in the 25 years he used it.

Re: High mileage cars (500,000 to 1 million miles)

Not sure if this is the right thread for this high mileage mint condition royal vintage car. If not, mods please move it to the correct thread.

A vintage Benz that has covered covered 23 lakh miles - or 37,01,491.2 km !!!

Erstwhile Travancore royals to gift Uthradom Thirunal's 1955 Mercedes-Benz to Yusuffali

The car was bought for Rs 12,000 in the 1950s. According to palace estimates, Uthradom Thirunal had travelled 40 lakh kilometres - as driver and as passenger - since the age of 38. Of the total distance travelled, 24 miles was in “CAN 42”
