Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

I am wondering if Nissan will produce great cars again, now that Carlos is out. After their merger with Renault, Nissan quality went down the drain.

Oh, the charm of this fellow!

Quote:
Ghosn, who fled Japan for Beirut at the end of December, said in an interview with Lebanese newspaper Annahar he would offer to help the finance and economy ministers in Lebanon, his childhood home.

“Solution for Lebanon is simple but requires the will,” he said, adding he has no interest in entering politics. “Political responsibility has to be with legitimate politicians who people voted for.”

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Many more details in an excellent article on Bloomberg:

Quote:
Sometime last fall, a security contractor based in Asia took a call that he found curious. The man on the other end of the line, a longtime acquaintance and, like him, an expert in protecting VIPs and valuable cargoes in challenging environments, was looking to hire for a job in Japan. He offered few specifics. The assignment would involve escorting someone out of the country, he said. It would pay well. And he was looking for operatives with military or police experience and, ideally, fair-skinned East Asian faces—the kind that wouldn’t stand out in Tokyo.

The contractor wanted to know more. Who would the operatives be protecting? What was the specific threat? Would the client be carrying cash or gold or something else of value? The caller wouldn’t say. The contractor was noncommittal but said he would get in touch if anyone else came to mind. They hung up, and the contractor didn’t really think about the job again—until he and the rest of the world saw the news about Carlos Ghosn.
And a small one on how this affects his finances:

Quote:
Life on the run is proving expensive for Carlos Ghosn.

The cost of his escape included $14 million in forfeited bail money while the operation that saw him celebrate New Year’s Eve in Beirut could have cost $15 million or more. hat includes $350,000 for the private jet that spirited the former auto executive from Osaka to Istanbul and millions of dollars for his multicountry extraction that would have taken a team of as many as 25 people half a year to plan, according to a private security expert who said he wasn’t involved and asked not to be identified given the nature of the operation.

Such outflows have seen Ghosn’s fortune shrink by 40% since he was arrested more than a year ago at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, according to estimates by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His fortune is now calculated to be about $70 million, down from around $120 million at the time of his first court appearance a year ago.

Hail GTO!!

I just read these articles and was about to post it. BOOM, it is already there on the thread

A fantastic article and can easily be a base plot for a forthcoming Hollywood movie.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Lebanon and Japan have 40 days to agree on Ghosn's fate.

Quote:
Lebanon and Japan have about 40 days to decide whether ousted Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn will be extradited to Japan or stand trial in Lebanon
Quote:
Japan has in recent days asked Lebanon to clarify what files Tokyo needs to send as part of an official extradition request
Quote:
They came back and requested a clarification. Today, we sent that to the Japanese
Japan must now either send a formal extradition request to Lebanon or send Ghosn’s file to Beirut and agree on a process for trying him there.

Ghosn Hires Legendary Agent Michael Ovitz for TV, Film Deals

Jalopnik reprints the Japanese Prosecutors request in a lot of detail. Pretty damning. I would have thought that these guys would have covered their tracks more diligently.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

The Ghosn escape mystery once deepening, is being revealed step by step. The arrest of the father-son duo Michael-Peter Taylor in the U.S. made headlines a few days ago. The involvement of a third person George-Antonie Zayek is also revealed.

The two black boxes involved and the fact that Michael and Zayek posed as musicians, seems hilarious. The musicians were a duo, the Michael-Zayek Band, which soon became a trio, the Michael-Peter-Zayek Band. Soon, the band is again back as a duo as Peter's out. A new anonymous bassist Carlos Ghosn joins the duo, but prefers to remain in the speaker black box, delivering his bass notes from there itself.

After performing as musicians in Japan, the band reaches Istanbul and thereafter they safely land at Lebanon. The target was 'New Year 2020' celebrations at Lebanon !

If we look at the mystery from the lens of a car maker, we can very well ask :-

Q : "Was Carlos Ghosn carried as a Fully Built Unit (FBU) or as a Semi Knocked Down (SKD) kit or as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kit ?"

A: " Fully Built Unit".

So all those movies showing former CIA etc employed as mercenaries to fight someone, extract someone is true

But not sure if any Japanese official has been charged. Was really bad to allow a high profile person escape like that.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

A new court order from Japan to the US on the Carlos Ghosn "Great Happy New Year Escape!" A deputy Chief Prosecutor in Japan issued arrest warrants for Michael and Peter Taylor for allegedly helping a criminal escape. But surprisingly, no arrest warrant or extradition request for Carlos Ghosn was issued against the Lebanese government, as Japan does not have an extradition treaty with Lebanon. The US has one such treaty with Lebanon. Hence, the matter gets murkier. The Taylors presently in the US if convicted, could face an upto three year jail term and a fine of 300,000 yen ($2,800).

But the Japanese court has not ordered seizure of the huge musical- band boxes and musical instruments (if any). . Normally going by the established procedures in a criminal case, all such material aiding a crime need to be seized by the prosecution as evidences to assist the prosecution and to nail the defence.

Nissan email trail casts new light on takedown of Carlos Ghosn

Source: Times of India

Quote:
Carlos Ghosn always said he was set up. Now there’s some evidence to support his claim. According to people familiar with what happened and previously unreported internal correspondence, the campaign by top Nissan Motor Co. executives to dethrone one of the most celebrated leaders in the automotive industry started almost a year before Ghosn’s arrest in late 2018 for alleged financial misconduct...

Alarmed by Ghosn’s pledge in early 2018 to make the alliance between the companies irreversible... Nissan should act to “neutralize his initiatives before it’s too late,” Nada wrote in mid-2018 to Hitoshi Kawaguchi, a senior manager at Nissan responsible for government relations, according to the correspondence...

Days before Ghosn’s arrest, Nada sought to broaden the allegations against Ghosn, telling Saikawa that Nissan should push for more serious breach-of-trust charges, according to correspondence at the time and people familiar with the discussions. There was concern that the initial allegations of underreporting compensation would be harder to explain to the public, the people said. The effort should be “supported by media campaign for insurance of destroying CG reputation hard enough,” Nada wrote...

As the date neared for the planned arrests of Ghosn and Kelly, preparations were made to assess how Renault’s board would react and how to respond if the French company were to assert its position.

Nissan should make it clear to Renault that the French automaker had no right to involve itself in the operations of its alliance partner, and that Nissan wasn’t obliged to offer positions within the company to candidates selected by Renault, Nada said, according to people familiar with the memo.

The contract binding the partnership, called RAMA, as well as a Netherlands-based entity called Renault-Nissan BV that was created to oversee its governance, should both be abolished as a result of Ghosn’s arrest, Nada asserted. That would give Nissan the right to acquire Renault shares in order to disenfranchise Renault or take it over, he is said to have written in the memo.
Quite shocking. I always believed innocence of Mr. Ghosn. But to see that in attempt to destroy one man's reputation, those idiots destroyed an entire company, its shareholders and a well-functioning alliance.

And I still suspect that there was hand of some senior officials of Japanese government. They were never happy with Ghosn's approach to reduce dependence on the keiretsu system, when he opted to look out for better and cost effective suppliers outside Japan.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Now the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's office in Japan wants the two Taylors, Michael and his son Peter to be extradited from the U.S. and has asked the U.S. State Department to do so. The two Taylors were arrested in Massachusetts in late May for abetting the December 2019 escape of Carols Ghosn to Lebanon via Turkey.

The complete report here:-

https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Nis...o-helped-Ghosn

Lebanon according to the report does not have an extradition treaty with Japan, but the U.S. has.
