Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn's arrested in Tokyo

Carlos Ghosn who is Chairman and CEO of Renault, and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, arrested in Tokyo has thrown the auto industry’s largest global alliance into turmoil, with the Japanese carmaker saying it will seek to remove him.

Both Ghosn and Director Kelly were reporting compensation to securities regulators in Tokyo that was less than the actual amount, Nissan said, adding that they did this to reduce Ghosn’s disclosed compensation.

At Nissan, he was paid about 1.1 billion yen ($10 million) for 2016 and about $6.5 million in the most recent fiscal year. He took home about $8.5 million at Renault and about $2 million from Mitsubishi in the latest period. At Renault, his package for 2017 was narrowly passed by Renault shareholders, but only after he agreed a 20 percent reduction.

He is credited for saving Nissan from collapse and bringing Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi together.

Re: Nissan India : The Way Forward

Carlos' arrest is shocking.
This can hurt Nissan's India operations as they are already struggling to get a foothold in the market.

re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Another high profile auto company executive fades into oblivion and besmirches his reputation. Ghosn's long standing image was of a man who meant business and who displayed his prowess with ruthlessness full of unpopular decisions, to resurrect ailing car companies back to good health and profitability. He displayed vision in decisions concerning Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi as corporate entities, but miserably failed to show a similar vision as far as his personal finances and dealings were concerned. The end is terrible and deplorable.

The auto industry in mid- 2018 very sadly lost Sergio Marchionne, another high profile auto executive and CEO of Fiat Chrysler to the inevitable, just before his tenure was about to end.

What a blow for the alliance, just when they were in the process if looking to consolidate their strengths and take the fight to the other manufacturers.

re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

I'm very, very upset. He's been one of my favourite automotive CEOs and an all-time great. His achievements are mega. Not only did he turnaround Nissan, but his tenure also led to some great products...as varied as the electric Leaf to the legendary GT-R.

But there is no excuse for a lack of ethics & morals. What an unfortunate fall from grace.
