China: Govt spies on EVs through car manufacturers

According to a media report, the government of China has mandated live information sharing including location, battery and engine function of all-electric vehicles (EVs). EV carmakers offer navigation, emergency assistance and other services using live data, which is then is shared with the authorities.

Manufacturers like Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler and others transmit data to local government centres. The government claims to use the data to improve the policy and planning regarding electric cars. The carmakers are mandated to share a total of 61 points of data which could identify information like the location of a user’s residence, their work place as well as places where they shop and worship.

The data from over 1.1 million vehicles is also sent to the data centre for new energy vehicles run by the Beijing Institute of Technology. It is reported that as mandatory production norms for green vehicles increase, these numbers are only expected to grow.

It is also reported that the 9 out of 10 EV owners don’t know about this data sharing as it is generally buried in the terms and conditions of use. While automakers initially resisted this data sharing, China threatened to cut back on subsidies to those companies who refused.

Don't want to get too political, but there's simply more intent than just...

use the data to improve the policy and planning regarding electric cars.
There are so many sourced from sensors on roads, power distribution network and the registration database. Hope connected cars aren't a next source of data collection from regulatory agencies- the smartphone is already their goldmine.

Data mining is the new trend, whether they use it or not, it's all there for the taking, using and selling. All those connected cars are also may come into this loop.

Is this ethical? why is no other country concerned by this? everyone goes crazy when someone hacks private company's data, no one blinks an eye when it is taken forcefully.

Waiting for the day when people will queue up for implanting tracking chip to their body for some freebies or tax subsidy

@Mods: delete this if this feels like OT.

Nothing new. This has been ongoing for decades. The kingpin and flag bearer of covert surveillance of private citizen data was the NSA in the United States. The level and depth of their reach will send shivers down your spine.

OT - Here's the guy who blew the lid off of this illegal practice - Edward Snowden. And here are the current surveillance programs.

Suffice to say, nothing you say or do online, on email, chat, forums is your private information.

Do watch this movie, if you have a Netflix subscription : Snowden.

This news in true.

Our company made Battery management systems(BMS) for EV cars to be sold in China.
I have personally seen the manufacturer request an implementation where the cell temperature and voltage, error codes with severity to be sent to cloud.

From architecture wise, all this data needs to be collected by our BMS ECU and needs to be sent to a node which will transmit it over the air to a cloud centre. They want to see the performance of the battery system. The reason is they have given huge subsidies to the cell manufacturers and they want feedback about the cells.
