Volvo Cars sets a new sales record in 2018

While the global automobile industry on the whole is stagnant, or even on the downturn in some countries, Volvo just had their best yearly sales ever, and the year is not even over yet!
I would say it is very well deserved, as their current crop of cars are very desirable. Mature and stylish designs, with top notch interior quality, and very good safety features

Quote:
Geely's Volvo Cars reported a new record in global annual sales as 2018 volume rose 13.5% year on year to 582,096 cars for the January-to-November period, compared with 513,055 last year.
With a month of the year still to go, the automaker has already beaten 2017's full year record of 571,577 cars. In November, the company sold 56,034 cars, up 8.3%.

SUV sales - with the XC40 newly added - boosted the result with growth across all main regions driven in particular by XC60 and XC40 which reached showrooms at the beginning of the year, adding a smaller model to the range. The V60 and V60 Cross Country also boosted volume while the new US-made S60 saloon is starting to reach dealerships in initial markets.

During the January-to-November period, US sales grew 24.5% compared with the same period last year, to 89,437 cars. The strong performance came on the back of growing demand for SUVs, led by the XC60. In November, Volvo Cars sold 8,181 cars, up 4.2% compared with the same month last year.

Retail sales in China reached 118,725 cars in the first 11 months, up 13.8% compared with the same period last year (104,344 cars sold). The locally assembled XC60 and S90 models were the main growth drivers. In November, the company sold 11,450 cars in China.

Europe also delivered a strong performance this year. Total retail sales in the 11 month period reached 288,369 cars, up 7.3%, helped by strong demand for the new 90 series cars and the XC60. In November, the company sold 27,797 cars in the region.

Globally, the XC60 continued to be the best-selling model in the first 11 months of the year, with 171,178 cars sold (2017: 169,673 units), followed by the XC90, with total sales at 85,159 cars (76,482) and the V40/V40 Cross Country at 70,875 cars (85,289). During the first 11 months, 67,104 XC40s were sold while the S90 achieved 52,034 units (39,815).

Re: Volvo Cars sets a new sales record in 2018

You bet it is well-deserved. In the auto industry, there is no problem that a good car cannot solve. We've seen it time & again. With Volvo however, I'll tweak that to say "there is no problem that good designs cannot solve". Volvo's cars were always competent - where they have really changed the game is in the styling department. From boring & old, they've become young & sexy.

Of course, it also helped that Volvo has a good line-up of SUVs & Crossovers and is embracing new technology quite aggressively.

Re: Volvo Cars sets a new sales record in 2018

I read this and think what a missed opportunity it is for Jaguar. Their design are equally fantastic if not more so but its the interior design, look and feel and quality that leaves a lot to be desired and kills the product when compared to its competition which are doing some truly fantastic insides. I haven't looked at a Jaguar interior and gone "Wow this is awesome" for a long time now.

Good going Volvo even though I am just not a fan of their engine downsizing. They aren't doing enough to separate their interiors either which have the same basic layout from the cheapest to the priciest. Lets see if they can maintain their current momentum in the next few years.

You know, they make TV car commercials with scenic locales and beautiful looking models to make the car look classy and desirable. The Volvo S90 looks like such a TV commercial even if driven driven by Ramu kaka through metro construction roads I can't remember a more dramatic transformation in design by a car company. Sorry Lexus, not this time!

This proves that good products will always have takers, irrespective of the market situation. Fresh design, quality interiors, excellent safety features and value for money proposition makes it attractive. 2019 S60 is just awesome!

I really appreciate their aggressive no-bar approach towards loading their products with features, while others think 100 times about costs.

If they can improve their dealer network, it can create a headache for Merc for sure.
