7 has gone from understated to gross! Kidney grille to Pig Snout, that's what it looks like. How did it ever make it this far to production? I guess the designer must be surrounded by sycophants!

The 7 Series’ kidney grille is now “significantly larger” and features active air flap control with adjustable vanes, which only open when the engine needs more cooling.

They had this in the previous gen when the vertical slats within the kidney grille could move to let in more/less air.
So maybe the horizontal "flap" at the top retracts as well, to let in more/less air.
Afterall, this ugly design must have survived the fights in the conference rooms at munich, for a functional purpose

There must be a reason why they choose Shanghai over any other place for launch, overall sales number perhaps?

Simple! China is the biggest market for the 7 Series

I hate the grill but admire BMW for being bold in appealing to its target market!

This car has the most number of engine types in production, 4,6,8 and 12 cylinder versions are available. The 30i is the four cylinder that's everywhere in the lineup and it's as powerful as the old six cylinder 30i with much higher torque over a wider band. The insulation should take care of the NVH issues with a four. The interior looks the same for a facelift.

Chinese market loves Long wheelbase. I never understood the rationale behind that because it isn't as if they are taller than the average western millionaire.

Now they want bigger grills and I don't understand that either.

BMW - Just like the normal and Long wheelbase versions, can you offer normal and bigger grill options?

The overall design is not all that bad but the grill totally takes up all the attention. It's a proper shock factor so BMW definitely managed to pull that off. You are not going to miss this on the road.

However the overall styling is so clean, I wonder how this car would look with the sleek grill like the one in the E38 of old.

The more I look at it, the more I think that they have tried to be different but the car would have looked so gangsta with a small grill. Right now it looks hungry and will eat up anything that comes its way.

The reason is that more Chinese can afford drivers than westerners, the profile of the buyer is very different. The Chinese buyers have their parents travelling with them more frequently and great rear seat space is considered prestigious/respectful.

I think its a great thing, it has forced the Europeans to make cars that can seat adults comfortably, a LWB E class would have never happened without Chinese demand. I don't understand why anyone wants a SWB S or 7, a large car without space is an oxymoron.

BMW 7-Series Black Fire Edition launched, limed to 150 units.

This 7er features a dark look all around, with glossy accents in the grille, contrasted by the dual-tone 20-inch wheels and blue brake calipers.

The interior eschews from the sinister look and combines black and red leather with piano trim. I feel they are trying to take it closer to Rolls Royce from the front fascia.

Also what is the reason it has no protrusion of the front bumper, I understand it on Amaze trying to be within 4m what is with a 7 series. Any hit on the front side and you damage the metal. Not that it is very important in this car just wondering? Chances are metal repairs might be cheaper than a composite material bumper with a tonne of electronics in it.

You gotta wonder if BMW has a separate 'Grille Division' that operates de-hors the main factory and assembly line. Especially after you examine the rest of the car, which looks particularly exquisite.

Jokes apart, I believe the new 7 could look great if they just tweak that grille a bit. I found this PS job somewhere on the internet recently and I believe it looks a whole lot better than what the designers at BMW have whipped up for the facelift:
