When the Macan was unveiled, Porsche purists screamed in horror. Of course, it didn't help that they were still not over the Cayenne. And the ugly Panamera was

But the fact is, cars like these keep Porsche healthy as a company, and thus give it more money to develop a better 911. Porsche would be dead today if it weren't for the Cayenne & Boxster.

Lamborghini was forced to follow & Ferrari will too. You can't fight the market. End of the day, the customer is king.

Crunch the numbers and you will find only 15% of Porsche's sales now coming from sports cars. Essentially Porsche over the years has moved from being a sportcar maker to a luxury car maker.

Purist can complain all they want, the growing numbers in their sports cars prove that none of them are moving away from the brand even though it's gone mainstream.

True! Every other luxury cross-over I see here on Singapore road is a Macan; more than the likes of X3, F-Pace etc. Infact it almost made the Cayenne quite pointless.

I'd read somewhere that the 718 Boxster / Cayman twins aren't doing particularly well, and sales of these cars have plummeted worldwide.

One Porsche representative had also candidly mentioned that the automaker may consider pulling the plug in the baby sports cars altogether, and consider introducing a new sports car called the 912 which would essentially be a narrow-body 911 (992) with the Cayman's boxer-four motor mounted over the rear axle.

Interesting times ahead for sports car enthusiasts. As I see it, it won't be long before the world is dominated by all kinds of SUVs, and only the ultra-hyper cars that push the envelope will remain the only other segment.

Maybe its the four pot thats rubbing the customers the wrong way. No petrolhead would want his Porsche to sound like a Subaru.
