Jaguar-Land Rover to shut plants from 8-12 April 2019 for Brexit disruption

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a production shutdown at its UK plants from April 8-12, 2019 in anticipation of possible Brexit disruptions. The announcement came when the car maker revealed the 2019 holiday list to its employees.

In July 2018, JLR had requested the UK government for more clarity on taxes post the country exiting the European Union (EU). The exit date is fixed as March 29, 2019. Beyond this date, existing rules of free trade and uniform market conditions for UK businesses will cease to apply.

In the UK, JLR operates 4 plants including 1 engine plant with around 40,000 UK employees. 40% of all parts are imported from the EU, while the carmaker accounts for 33% of all cars exported out of the UK.

JLR, which is owned by Tata Motors, opened a manufacturing plant in Slovakia last year. The company also has plants in China, Brazil, India and Austria.

Jaguar Owner Posts quarterly $3.8 Billion Loss.

Quote:
Brexit remains the biggest threat for JLR. The company is working with the base case scenario of a negotiated deal where trade would be unhindered. However, a ‘no deal’ Brexit could hurt volumes and profitability significantly.
If demand remains subdued and technology disruption continues, the possibility of a further impairment also becomes a reality. The JLR product portfolio has been primarily concentrated on the diesel engine, and governments in Europe are looking at putting heftier taxes on such vehicles.

This is just a maintenance shutdown and had nearly nothing to do with brexit, JLR has a plant in Slovakia and that's where production will shift in case the duty structure is unfavourable for manufacturing in the UK. Brexit is being used by JLR to hide their failure to meet the increased demand for petrol and the fact that their engine lineup doesn't live up to the hype.

The UK is still a large market for the German companies and they stand to lose if duties are raised.

Top 10 in the UK are:

Ford Fiesta - Spain
VW Golf - Germany
Ford Focus - Germany
Nissan Qashqai - UK
VW Polo - Spain
Vauxhall Corsa - Spain
Mercedes A Class - Hungary
Kia Sportage - Slovakia
Toyota Yaris - Slovakia or France
Mercedes C Class - Germany

Nissan excepted, every car in this list comes from Europe. Only other British car to make it in the list from time to time is the Mini
