Re: Toyota & Suzuki agree to collaborate at the international level

Suzuki, Subaru, Daihatsu, Toyota and Mazda jointly develop next-generation in-vehicle communication equipment.

As the automotive industry moves towards a more connected future, the communication between customers and their vehicles is becoming the next great frontier. Carmakers are racing to deliver services such as remote vehicle control and emergency calls to consumers, leaving some companies in the lurch.

With that in mind, Toyota, Daihatsu, Mazda, Subaru and Suzuki have reached an agreement to jointly develop technical specifications for next-generation vehicle communications devices, in the interest of promoting the common use of these systems.

Toyota begins assembly from SKD imports in Ghana.

Toyota has started assembling vehicles in the African republic of Ghana, beginning with the Hilux pickup truck.

next year it would also assemble the Suzuki Swift compact at the plant, again from SKD imports. That follows a collaboration agreement signed in 2019 between Toyota and Suzuki.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki agree to collaborate at the international level

With the collaboration now expanding to other countries, it is inevitable that Toyota will buy out Suzuki in the due course of time.

In India, Maruti has such a large base, even if Toyota buys out Suzuki, they will retain it as is just for the brand value, volumes and the reach.

Suzuki and Daihatsu to invest in Toyota EV alliance.

Five major Japanese carmakers to partner on R&D and self-driving vehicles.

Suzuki and Daihatsu have announced that they are joining a Toyota-led commercial electric vehicle entity, which is aimed at bringing electrification and autonomous driving to commercial vehicles. The two automakers will join Isuzu and Hino, Toyota’s truck and bus unit, in the partnership, which was formed earlier this year.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki agree to collaborate at the international level

Toyota and Subaru also have joint car launches - that started earlier with the GT86/BRZ; they recently announced their joint first all-electric compact crossover - the Solterra.

The high costs associated with the move to electric will necessary increase the pace of joint-product development, especially for smaller automakers. Even the CEO of the new multinational, multi-manufacturer, cross-Atlantic Stellantis recently expressed his concern at the cost arbitrage of electric vehicles.

This thread title needs to be updated to include the Subaru partnership.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki agree to collaborate at the international level

Toyota, Daihatsu and Suzuki's developed sports car to have a Suzuki engine.

Toyota has begun planning in the direction of organizing the entire project, Daihatsu and Suzuki joining the joint development and creating the exterior of the three manufacturers while sharing basic mechanical parts.

Suzuki leads the engine and proceeds with development by making use of the specialty fields of each company.

THE POWER TRAIN WILL BE DEVELOPED MAINLY BY SUZUKI. IT IS LIKELY TO USE THE IN-LINE 3-CYLINDER AND 1L TURBO MOUNTED ON THE CROSBY TO BE A STANDARD, BUT THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE 4TH AND 1.4L TURBOS FOR SWIFT SPORTS WILL BE REDUCED.
Quote:
THE "1L CLASS HYBRID" IS THE INITIAL PLANNING OF THE POWER UNIT, BUT SUZUKI IS GOING TO BE TALKED ABOUT IN A DIRECTION THAT IS GREATLY RELATED TO POWER UNIT DEVELOPMENT.

SUZUKI HAS A STRAIGHT 3- AND 1L TURBO MOUNTED ON THE CROSBY. SPEAKING OF THE 1L TURBO, THERE IS ALSO A 3-CYLINDER MADE BY DAIHATSU MOUNTED ON ROCKY / RISE, BUT THIS IS ALSO AN OLD BASIC DESIGN.

ON THE OTHER HAND, SUZUKI HAS A STRAIGHT 4 AND 1.4L TURBO OF SWIFT SPORTS, AND IT IS INFORMATION THAT IT WILL BE A 48V MILD HYBRID IN THE NEXT MODEL, BUT IF IT IS INSTALLED, IT WILL BE GREATLY REMOVED FROM THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT "LITTER CAR CLASS".

AFTER ALL, IT WOULD BE REALISTIC TO INSTALL IT AS A MILD HYBRID BASED ON SUZUKI'S 1L TURBO.

Sounds really interesting. Will be curious as to how it pans out. Oh I wish someone made a sub-2L V6 just for the sake of sounding great.

This was a surprise out of the blue.

Ofcourse, Toyota kept on hinting the return of the MR2, ever since the 1st gen 86 was unveiled, to complete their sportscar trio. But apart from the FR-S concept, nothing much came out. Ofcourse, there were rumours of the MR2 successor being an EV.

But the present news is exciting. And pretty much a last hurrah for small mid engine ICE cars. Hope, it is a proper successor to the ertswhile MR2s. And the partners, both Suzuki and Daihatsu, are masters in small packaging. And the price will defintiely be low, as it won't be priced above the 86.

Also, hope it is more of an MR2 successor than a Copen/Cappuccino one.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki agree to collaborate at the international level

Considering the BR-Z is pretty small (~4.3m), I'll take this story with a grain of salt. I'd have believed this in 2011, but not in 2021; Everybody is moving to some sort of [X]EV.

Unless this model is a kei car exclusively made for Japan.

Since it is being developed jointly by three companies, makes it believable. If it was Toyota alone, they would have shelved it citing profitability.

Since, the rumours are of a 1000cc model, could be one that would be available internationally too since kei cars are still under 660cc.
