Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

General Motors has officially confirmed that the 8th-generation Corvette will debut on July 18, 2019. The car, which is reported to be mid-engined, has been spied testing multiple times.

The spy photos reveal the car's low-slung stance, side air intakes and front lip spoiler. At the rear, there's a fixed spoiler and dual exhaust vents on both sides. The car is seen riding on 5-spoke black alloy wheels. On the inside, the car gets a dual spoke multifunction steering wheel, digital driver information cluster and digital screen for the IRVM.

While the exact specifications of the car are not known, it is expected to be powered by a revised version of the previous generation’s 6.2-liter V8 engine developing a rumoured 500 BHP. The engine is also expected to be renamed to LT2, reflecting its new location. The sports car is expected to be paired with only a 7-speed dual clutch transmission from Tremec. A manual gearbox is not likely to be introduced.

Re: Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

Chevrolet has, at last, revealed the first mid-engined Corvette to the world, and it's very quick even in base 'Stingray' form.

Quote:
“The traditional front-engine vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout,” GM boss Mark Reuss says, adding “In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history.”

The new layout doesn’t only mean it’ll drive unlike previous Corvettes - it also looks very different too, with its cab-forward layout (said to be inspired by F-22 and F-35 fighter jets) and giant side intakes. The rear end keeps it in the family, though, with some Camaro-like vibes going on.

Plus, although the engine is in an unfamiliar place, the unit itself is a little more familiar. It’s an evolution of the old Corvette’s LT1 pushrod 6.2-litre V8, dubbed ‘LT2’. Although the Stingray is the baby of the ‘Vette range, there’s nothing entry-level about the performance: the new Small Block - which also gains a dry-sump lubrication system - is good for 488bhp and 470lb ft of torque.

That’s an increase of 40bhp compared to the old Stingray, helping launch the 1530kg (dry) sports car from 0-60mph in under three seconds. We don’t have an exact figure just yet, nor has the top speed been revealed.

The LT2 engine sends its power rearwards via a Chevy’s first dual-clutch gearbox. The Tremec-supplied transmission packs eight ratios and has a de-clutch feature. There’s no mention of a manual ‘box, however, and it seems unlikely one will be offered.

Re: Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

Astonishing VFM this car is! Sadly unlike the Mustang, this car will never see our roads thanks to GM's exit. From a practical point of view, only SUVs are going to sell here anyway, we enthusiast can hopefully afford to rent one when we go visit the west

Interesting fact is that Corvette was always intended to be a mid-engine car right from its initial days, remember this from for video about corvette's history. Z06 and Zr1 versions are going to be a surprise in terms of Engine, traditional push-rod V8 might be ditched for much more modern unit.

I have a question, is this the successor to the sports car which uses plastic body panels? which flex when pushed down upon? or am I thinking of another American vehicle?

Re: Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

Went for the launch party at my local chevy dealership. It was beyond incredible. A mid engine at that price point is just unithinkable, usually you have to shell out close to quarter million dollars.

Here are a few pictures from the launch. Money shot, real deal(engine shot), and the crowd at the launch. Hope you all like them.

Re: Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

What a striking looking car. And for that kind of money this should be proper fun. Even the interiors look great in pictures and all the middle aged men going through mid life crisis eyeing this car should rejoice as it has space for a set of golf bags. I ve also read that the first year bookings have all been sold out.
What is not to like!!
Oh, I am now waiting for them to launch the upgraded variations of this with 700+ bhp.

A Corvette C8 whizzed past me while I was walking around waiting for my car to charge at the supercharger. The C8 sounded awesome, and was drop dead gorgeous to look at.

Re: Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

Seems like the Z06 & ZR1 versions of the C8 Corvette is around the corner ! Looks like serious business since they have a Porsche & Ferrari as benchmarks for testing alongside the prototype !

Quote:
David Wesel captured this video of the Corvette Engineering Team led by Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter testing the C8 Corvette Prototypes in Marietta, Ohio on April 27-28, 2021.

These are the first sightings of what is believed to be the C8 Corvette ZR1 with quad-pipe center-mounted exhaust as well as a C8 Corvette Z06 with the exhaust mounted on the corners.

Re: Mid-engined Corvette C8 to debut on July 18, 2019

New Spy Video of the Z06 version of the C8. Listen to that exhaust note !

Quote:
While Chevrolet is staying tight-lipped about the Z06, a prototype was recently spotted doing high speed runs on the 3-mile (4.8 km) long North South Straight Away at the Milford Proving Grounds.

While there isn’t much to see in the video, it’s an audible delight as you can hear the Z06’s flat-plane crank V8 sing. Those paying close attention will also notice the driver appears to be using launch control. While that’s hard to verify, it’s a natural conclusion as you can hear the engine build up power followed by the chirp of the tire

Power will be provided by a mid-mounted 5.5-liter V8 that is rumored to produce around 617 hp (460 kW / 626 PS) and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque. That’s less than its predecessor, but it’s still a sizable jump from the standard model which has a 6.2-liter V8 with up to 495 hp (369 kW / 502 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque.

Regardless of the final output, the Corvette Z06 promises to be lightning quick as the C8 with the Z51 Performance Package can rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 2.9 seconds. It can also run the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at 121 mph (195 km/h), and the Z06 will undoubtedly improve on those numbers.
