60,000 km drive in an EV - No petrol station required

Dutchman drives from the Netherlands to Australia without visiting a gas station – over 60,000 kms in a electric vehicle

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/...c-car-journey/

How far could you drive without gas? That’s the question answered by a 32-year-old Dutchman who drove from his home nation, Netherlands, to Australia in an electric car.

“For almost two years I have been living an unbelievable and crazy dream,” says Wiebe Wakker. “In 687 days, I saw 31 countries and drove 60,000 km without visiting a gas station.” Wakker left the Netherlands in his car, Blue Bandit, with no money, relying instead on people he met for food, shelter and electricity for his car. His quest - Plug Me In - captured the imagination of people around the world and has become a prominent platform for sustainability and electric cars.

I see he skipped Pakistan. Any idea why? Is it due to unstable situation between neighbors during last few months or no private cars are allowed between Pakistan and India, irrespective of country of origin?

Don't know why he skipped Pakistan. On the other hand you can drive from Pakistan to India or vice versa if you are a foreigner (non Indian passport).

Biggest drawback of a drive in an EV is the long hours needed to charge up the batteries. I wouldn't like to spend hours at a stretch to get enough juice into the batteries vs pulling up at a gas station: "fill shut it and forget it" in a few minutes.

This was a crowd funded venture. He travelled to countries where he got re-charging free at re-charging centres or people's homes (like in India). So he drove through countries he got crowd support from. Some data based on his estimates :-
  1. 17 megawatt hours of electricity were used on the journey;
  2. Wakker estimates the electricity used would have cost $A5,608;
  3. 6,786 litres of petrol would have been used if the Golf was not converted;
  4. Based on $1.40/litre for petrol, it could have cost $A9,500 in fuel;
  5. Based on a Golf emitting 128gm/km, over 12 tonnes of CO2 were saved as a result.

We can adopt this approach today when ICE alternatives are legal. I suspect in 15 or max 20 years time things will be different both in terms of legal use of ICE cars as well as the endurance of EVs.
